Minnesota know they need points with ‘road running out’, says Knowles

Cameron Knowles acknowledged Minnesota United’s recent form has not been good enough with time running out, but he is confident they can get back to winning ways against St. Louis City SC.

Minnesota suffered another loss in midweek, going down 2-1 to FC Dallas to follow up a 5-4 loss at the Portland Timbers.

They have now won just one of their last 13 matches in MLS, leaving them 11th in the Western Conference, sitting one point behind ninth-place San Diego FC.

With 10 games left to play in the regular season, Knowles conceded that Minnesota needed to get back to winning ways sooner rather than later.

“The road is running out in terms of games in order to get the points to get above the line,” he said.

“We know we have to get points. The task doesn’t change – the opportunity is still there for us.

“We have a lot of belief in this group, and when we are at our best, we can compete with anyone.”

St. Louis City, meanwhile, are flying high, sitting sixth in the West, nine points better off than their opponents this weekend.

That is down to their 14-game unbeaten streak in the league, extending that run thanks to a 2-2 draw with the Portland Timbers, though they could have walked away with all three points had they not conceded an 89th-minute equaliser.

New signing Rafael Navarro scored a brace in that game, with his first goal coming in the opening minute, but head coach Yoann Damet was quick to point out that St. Louis’ strength comes in numbers.

“We’ve got a full group that is going to contribute for the rest of the season, that is going to make a difference and try to impact the group in a positive way,” he said.

“We had proof of that [against Portland]. I see a very strong group, and Nava came in really well, started really well and brought us interesting things on both sides of the ball.”

St. Louis City SC – Rafael Navarro

Navarro scored just 34 seconds into his first start with St. Louis in the club’s 2-2 draw with Portland.

It was the first first-minute goal in St. Louis’ MLS history, with the previous fastest a Rasmus Alm goal after 84 seconds against Chicago Fire in May 2024.

Yeboah scored his 12th regular-season goal of 2026 on Wednesday, becoming the second Minnesota player to reach 12 goals in a single regular season (Christian Ramirez in 2017 – 14).

He is up to 28 regular-season goals with Minnesota, second most in the club’s MLS history (Robin Lod – 34).

MATCH PREDICTION: ST. LOUIS CITY SC WIN

Minnesota have won six of seven all-time meetings with St. Louis in all competitions (L1), including the last five in a row.

The Loons have won all three of their matches at St. Louis, including a 2–1 victory in their last visit in July 2025.

However, St. Louis stretched their unbeaten run to 14 straight regular-season matches (W9 D5) with their 2-2 draw at Portland. This is the second-longest single-season unbeaten run over the last eight MLS campaigns dating back to 2019, with only Real Salt Lake’s 15-game run in 2024 going on for longer.

So that makes St. Louis favourites, especially since each of Minnesota’s seven losses since the beginning of May across all competitions have been by a single goal, including their 2-1 loss to FC Dallas.

Over their 17 competitive matches in that time, the Loons have an even goal differential (28-28) despite having three wins compared to seven losses (D7).
