Milwaukee Brewers give exciting update on Brandon Woodruff ahead of NLCS Game 3

· · 3 min read

The Milwaukee Brewers, to the delight of their fans and the dismay of the national media, are leading the NLCS 2-0 over the two-time World Series Champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers. After two exciting wins in Milwaukee, the next three games (if that many need to be played) will take place out in California. Indeed, there is a great deal of buzz surrounding the Brewers, and it can be felt in every corner of Milwaukee.

After being swept by these same Dodgers in last year’s NLCS, the Brewers are certainly showing that they have improved over the last 12 months. Their incredible pitching staff, especially their dynamic bullpen, has been the talk of baseball over the last couple of days after it tossed five perfect innings of relief in Game Two (an MLB postseason record, by the way).

While there can be virtually no complaints regarding the Brewers pitching staff this postseason, there is one arm that fans and the team wish was available: Brandon Woodruff. The two-time All-Star missed last year’s postseason run with an injury, and he was limited to just nine starts this year due to a second tear in his surgically repaired shoulder.

Over the last couple of months, though, there was been some optimism, albeit minimal, that he could return at some point in the postseason. This second injury did not require surgery, and he has been able to, slowly, start throwing again.

On Tuesday, he threw a bullpen session, 31 pitches, and felt strong afterwards. When asked about the velocity and movement on his pitches, Woodruff said, “If you ask me, it’s pretty good.”

Brewers bullpen coach Jim Henderson would not rule out the possibility that Woodruff could pitch for Milwaukee in the World Series, should they make it.

“He’s performed really well when he’s on the mound. So it’s never a question of whether we want him out there.

“…It’s probably going to be based on his health and his strength and velo.”

There are few things that fans would love to see more than Woodruff, a long-time favorite, pitch for the Brewers in the World Series. The longest-tenured player in Milwaukee, he has been with the team through the ups and downs of many seasons, and the fact that his body would not allow him to stay on the mound consistently has been a disappointment to everyone.

It is still a huge longshot that Woodruff will be healthy enough to pitch in the World Series. That being said, his improved health is just one more thing fans can feel good about regarding this Brewers team.
