Mike Penders set to compete for a first-team role at Chelsea after Strasbourg loan

· · 1 min read

Following a successful loan spell with Strasbourg, Mike Penders (20) is set to return to Stamford Bridge and compete for a first-team role next season, according to The Athletic. The Belgian youth international will be hoping to impress Xabi Alonso and compete with David Sanchez for a starting role.

The 20-year-old was a regular starter during his loan spell at the Stade de La Meinau. He made 52 appearances across all competitions with the Ligue 1 club, conceding 65 goals and keeping 12 clean sheets. The goalkeeper only missed one game in the French first division last term.

Jorgensen to depart with Penders to stay?

With Penders set to stay in London and compete for a first-team role, this likely spells the end of the road for Filip Jörgensen. The Danish international stopper has struggled for opportunities since moving to the Premier League and only made 5 appearances in the top flight last season.
