Mike Elko trusts star QB’s ‘clutch gene’ ahead of Texas A&M’s opener

Texas A&M’s 2026 season opener vs. Missouri State isn’t expected to be a close game on paper, as the Aggies enter Saturday night as a 41-point home favorite, while the Bears’ only chance of keeping things close is to force early mistakes. Given the talent difference, I don’t expect this version of A&M to struggle in any area.

For most of the Texas A&M fan base, redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed, entering his second full starting season, will be the primary focus, given his notable improvement during the preseason, looking like one of the best players on the field while showing consistency as a passer, especially his deep ball accuracy and growing chemistry with transfer wide receiver Isaiah Horton.

Last season, Reed’s career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns were overshadowed by his 12 interceptions, which led all starting quarterbacks in the SEC, and his four interceptions in both losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff were a clear sign that his mental mistakes and decision-making late in games needed to be the focus this offseason.

Until the games are played, any speculation on how much Reed has improved is pointless, but trust Mike Elko, who once again praised his veteran signal caller during Wednesday’s Aggie Football Hour, is fully confident that a new version of Marcel Reed is in store for 2026.

Marcel Reed is widely considered a “high variance” quarterback given his up-and-down play, but when he’s on and playing in a scheme that utilizes his athleticism and ability to make plays outside the pocket, the Tennessee native is truly one of the most “clutch” quarterbacks in the country, and with one of the deepest wide receiver rotations at his disposal, new OC Holmon Wiggins is expected to bring the best out of his dual-threat QB.

Texas A&M will host Missouri State on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 6:00 p.m., and the game will air on ESPN.
