Michigan basketball officially names Mike Boynton Jr. as head coach
Michigan basketball removed the interim tag from Mike Boynton Jr.’s title and officially named him the head coach on Friday, July 10.
He will begin with a two-year contract, according to a release sent out by the program.
“Mike is a veteran assistant with strong head coaching experience and a clear understanding of the standard we expect at Michigan,” athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement. “Over the past two seasons, he has been an invaluable member of our staff, bringing stability, leadership and perspective during an important period of success.
“Our players and staff believe in his vision, are committed to his leadership and are excited for the opportunity to pursue great success together this season.”
Boynton was named the interim just days after Dusty May abruptly left the program to take the job as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks and in the weeks since has spent his time re-recruiting the Michigan roster. To this point, 13 of the 14 scholarship players have reaffirmed their commitment to the Wolverines, with junior guard L.J. Cason as the final piece to make a decision.
Boynton is in Year 3 with the Wolverines and during the first two seasons as perhaps the team’s top recruiter and defensive specialist, U-M went 64-13, won a Big Ten regular season title, a Big Ten Tournament title and the national championship in April − the program’s second in its history − which capped a record-setting 37-3 season.
“I’m grateful to Warde for his confidence and thankful for the opportunity to lead this program,” Boynton said in a statement. “We have built a championship culture and a standard that everyone associated with this program takes great pride in.
“We have an outstanding group of players, and I’m excited to get to work and continue the success we’ve established together.”
