Miami vs Stanford Prediction: The Dangerous ACC Opener

Yeah, Stanford needed a big comeback and a late scoop and score to beat Hawaii – an all-time brutal/miraculous one, depending on which side of the 4.5 you might have had – but it got pushed.

After what, at the time, looked like a fourth-quarter meltdown, the Cardinal pulled out a 37-27 win in the first game under new head coach Tavita Pritchard. That was fun, but the new era of Cardinal football can go into hyperdrive with a shocker over Miami.

When we last saw the Hurricanes, they were just a little more air under a final Carson Beck pass away from winning the national title. Now they’re traveling across the country to get the ACC season going.

All of a sudden, the Stanford defense broke down against Hawaii.

It was great in a dominant first half, but it was like the Rainbow Warriors needed a half to shake off the rust, and then quarterback Micah Alejado and the attack went off. Here’s the difference – besides Miami being far better than Hawaii – the Hurricanes have a ground game.

Backs Mark Fletcher and CharMar Brown will hammer away early, and then new starting quarterback Darian Mensah will go to work.

Can the Cardinal get physical from jump?

Miami’s defensive front is far tougher than Hawaii’s, but Stanford will still want to get tough right away, with star back Micah Ford looking for a second straight big performance.

He took over with 99 yards and three scores against the Rainbow Warriors, and even if he doesn’t go anywhere, he’ll take the focus away from quarterback Davis Warren and the passing game.

Miami will win, but it’ll take a little while to look the part. Why? Besides this being the opening game of the year, and Stanford already having a game under its belt, there’s the game time.

It’s a new season and new teams, but Stanford won the home opener against Boston College last year and shocked Florida State 20-13. ACC teams from the East Coast struggle when they go to Palo Alto, and to Berkeley against Cal, too.

The game starts at 9 pm ET, which means it’ll be well after midnight by the time this finishes. These are young people who are used to staying up late, but being three time zones to the left should be a wee bit of an issue.
