The Mets continued the churn of the pitching staff, recalling Zach Thornton and optioning Tobias Myers to Triple-A Syracuse.

Thornton will start today in the final game of the first half for the Mets against the Red Sox, which will be Thornton’s third MLB start. His first start against the was a little rough; over four and a third innings, Thornton surrendered four hits, including a home run, and walked two, good for four earned runs and a loss. However, his second start was far better, going six strong innings of one run ball, striking out seven while walking one.

If the Mets decide to trade some of their starters at the deadline, and if pitchers like Jonah Tong and Jack Wenninger continue to scuffle, Thornton may be a key piece of the Mets’ rotation through the end of 2026.

Myers has recently been a ping pong ball, shuttling between the big league club and Triple-A a number of times. After a great spring training, Myers had a decent start to the season before hitting a tough patch before being sent down at the end of May. Since his initial optioning, things have been ugly for Myers, whose ERA has jumped more than two runs in that time.
