Mets Need To Find Way To Trade These Three Players

This season is a lost cause for the New York Mets, and they need to start thinking about flipping some players for assets they can rely on in the future.

There have been some bright spots to come from this season, with Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing at the top of that list. However, some of the Mets’ moves have not worked out, and they still have a chance to right some wrongs at the deadline. They have to find a way to trade these three players for some kind of return. 

Freddy Peralta

When the Mets acquired Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers, they thought they were getting an ace. Instead, Peralta has had the worst year of his career. Still, he has some trade value as contenders look to bolster their rotations before the postseason.

He is a two-time All-Star who is a prime change-of-scenery candidate. He will hit the open market in a few months, and the Mets may not have any interest in bringing him back. Trading him now, even for a minimal return, would be wise for David Stearns. A prospect will do the Mets more good down the line than Peralta would for the rest of the year.

Luis Robert Jr.

Robert has a $20 million club option for next season, but he has performed well below expectations. He went on a hot streak to end last season, but struggled this season before landing on the injured list. He just got back from his injury, and teams are reportedly interested in him.

With the emergence of Benge and Ewing, the Mets do not need him. They should trade Robert for anything they can get at this point. Even if they have to take on some of his remaining salary, the Mets would be better off getting something out of him before letting him walk. He is a former All-Star, and some team may be interested in swapping a prospect for his potential.

Brooks Raley

The 38-year-old southpaw is still getting things done at a high level. Teams are always looking for relievers at the deadline, and Raley may be the Mets’ best trade chip right now. He is a rental arm with a 1.96 ERA in 41 outings.

Even the salary for this season is low, so teams should have no problem acquiring him. His age is a factor, but he is a few months away from free agency, so teams would not be tied to him for his age-39 season or beyond. The Mets have no reason to keep him around with the postseason out of reach.
