A lot of the reason why the New York Mets have struggled this year is because of some of the injuries they’ve dealt with on both sides of the baseball. 

The Mets clearly aren’t a great team, but they’d probably be a lot better had they been healthier throughout this season. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case, and as a result, the Mets are expected to move on from some of their better players.

One guy in particular who could be dealt is right-hander Clay Holmes, who has been sidelined since taking a line drive off his leg against the New York Yankees on May 15. 

It remains uncertain when Holmes is exactly going to return, though there’s hope that he’s going to be available toward the back end of this season, and teams could be willing to take the risk of trading for him at the deadline in hopes of him being healthy.

While that’s definitely a possibility, it sounds like the Mets might have to move on from him for much less than they were hoping for. According to MLB.com, his price would be a lot lower than the Mets were hoping to get for him just a few months ago.

“With each passing week, the Mets are looking more and more like Deadline sellers. If that comes to pass for the second time in four years, Peralta would be the most obvious candidate to move, given that he can be a free agent after the season. Although Peralta hasn’t pitched like an ace, he’s playoff tested and would bolster nearly any staff in baseball. The Mets also have Clay Holmes to sell, but his price would almost certainly be discounted as he recovers from a fractured right fibula,” Anthony DiComo wrote.

The one interesting part with Holmes is that he isn’t a free agent until after the 2027 season, so a team would be getting him for this year and next. If a team believes they have about a year-and-a-half-long window and believes in Holmes to get outs at a high level, they’ll probably take a look at him. 

I think the Mets will still get a bit more than perhaps what they’re thinking right now, as pitchers have gone for ridiculous prices recently, but this injury definitely put them in a much tougher spot than they would have been had they moved on from him before that.
