‘Maybe we can redo that…’ – Donald Trump gives Mavericks fans hope 19 months after Luka Doncic trade

· · 2 min read

U.S. President Donald Trump made a comment about the February 2025 trade sending Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers while giving a speech in Dallas, Texas.

The city of Dallas might have Cooper Flagg now, but the residents still ache over the decision to trade Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers despite the deal being almost two years old.

Even President Trump is aware of what a bad deal that was for the Mavericks when they made the deal. Now, he’s joking about using his powers as President to give Dallas their superstar back.

Donald Trump addresses Luka Doncic trade by threatening a redo

President Trump made it clear in his speech that he could not understand the rationale behind the trade despite his limited interest in basketball, claiming at the end that they could redo the trade using his power.

“This is a big Dallas Mavericks team, which is going to be hopefully good. I must tell you, I don’t understand the trade. That trade is not good. What do I know about basketball? Was it Luka? Maybe we can redo that trade? I redo deals all the time.”

Mavericks fans don’t need any false hope regarding their superstar guard. Ironically that the Mavericks built the perfect team to maximise Doncic’s play style immediately as he left the franchise.

If Luka could be on the Mavericks right now and solve their major issues at point guard, the franchise would be an easy title contender with Flagg and Kyrie Irving.

Unfortunately, the Mavericks probably never end up with Flagg if Luka stayed, and the brand-new Mavericks front office led by Masai Ujiri is fully committed to the Flagg era.

Trump and Mavericks fans still pining for Doncic need to move on and embrace the bright future they have. After all, redoing the trade isn’t the only way Luka might come back to Dallas.

Luka Doncic could be a free agent in 2028

Doncic signed a short-term contract extension with the Lakers last summer, which could let him enter free agency as early as the summer of 2028.

Doncic will likely enter free agency to be able to earn the biggest possible contract after the Mavericks’ trade hurt his earnings by making him ineligible for a supermax after seven years of service.

The Lakers can give Doncic 35% of the cap in a contract in 2028 free agency. But if money isn’t the most important thing for the Slovenian, maybe the Mavericks can try to right their wrongs.

The Mavericks project to have a lot of cap space in the 2028 free agency. While the ownership is the same, the new front office alongside old Luka organisational favorites like Michael Finley could make a compelling pitch to bring him back to the Mavericks.
