“Maybe Play For the US Next Time”: Fans Take Shots at Gabby Williams After She Angrily Takes Off Silver Medal With 2nd Consecutive Finals Loss
Gabby Williams lost a second consecutive international final to the USA after France lost Sunday’s 2026 FIBA World Cup final 97-79. Williams, who plays for France despite holding American citizenship, couldn’t help France beat the USA in the 2024 Paris Olympics final, losing 67-66.
That was a close loss and could have gone either way till the end. However, Sunday’s game had major swings. Williams had France up 31-17 with 7:27 left in the second quarter, and it looked like the Europeans had given themselves another chance in a major final against the defending champions.
However, France completely lost control of the game midway through the second quarter. The Americans kept chipping away and cut the deficit to two points after a Caitlin Clark 3-pointer to close the half. Many expected the French to regain control after the halftime break, but that didn’t happen.
The USA carried the momentum into the third quarter and put the game away by outscoring Williams and Co. 30-12 in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. France never recovered and got blown out.
Gabby Williams and the other players knew they had suffered a massive collapse and had squandered the chance to end the USA’s dominance. A video on X summed up Williams’ frustration, in particular, as she angrily walked back to the locker room and took off her silver medal.
Team USA fans dissed Williams for committing to play for France instead.
“Maybe play for the US next time,” one fan said.
