Klay Thompson hasn’t been the same player since leaving the Golden State Warriors in 2024.

Although the four-time NBA champion remains a high-level three-point shooter at age 36, he isn’t the dependable scorer or on-ball defender he once was, which has led to justified criticism.

Reuniting with Stephen Curry and the Warriors could help the prolific sharpshooter regain his confidence and, more importantly, give him a chance to compete with an organization that’s closer to championship contention than the Dallas Mavericks. According to a report from Heavy’s Sean Deveney, Thompson could soon become available.

“Thompson does not fit Dallas’s timeline, and if the Mavs can get anything–youth, a few second-rounders–for him, they will,” Deveney reported Sunday. “He’s still a 38% three-point shooter.”

It’s tough to blame the Warriors for moving on from Thompson after the 2023-24 campaign, as his declining production and forgettable Play-In outing vs. the Sacramento Kings (0-10 shooting from the field and 0-6 shooting from beyond the arc in a 118-94 blowout loss) made it clear that he was heading in the wrong direction.

With the Dubs failing to successfully replace Thompson’s perimeter shooting consistency, though, the idea of bringing the Washington State product back to the Bay isn’t as wild as some think. The Dubs shot 35.6% from three this season, which is undoubtedly below the franchise’s standards.

Thompson could help in that regard, and if the Warriors prove willing to part ways with young assets such as Brandin Podziemski and/or Moses Moody, they could take one of the best shooters in NBA history off the Mavericks’ hands.
