Marvel's Wolverine Gets Official Sales Update
Last month, Marvel’s Wolverine released to fairly underwhelming reviews and a surprisingly vitriolic response from gamers on social media. The latest PlayStation exclusive, which currently has a solid if unremarkable 75 on Metacritic, became the subject of derision for its linear, hand-holding gameplay and now-infamous “fart trail” UI.
Despite this, the latest data confirms the game has still managed to do really quite well in terms of sales. I guess that’s what happens when you put one of the most popular superheroes in the world on the box. According to the latest from industry analyst group Circana (via Games Industry.biz), Marvel’s Wolverine was September’s best-selling game in the United States across physical and digital, which is especially impressive when you consider just how stacked September ended up being due to everyone attempting to get out of the way of GTA 6.
Eight of the ten best-selling games for September 2026 were released that same month, with the likes of NBA 2K27 and EA Sports FC 27 just behind Marvel’s Wolverine. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave clocked in at fourth, followed by The Blood of Dawnwalker, Wardogs, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Halloween: The Game, and Ace Combat 8.
It’s worth noting these numbers are only representative of U.S. sales, but Sony did officially release EU PlayStation Store data that put Marvel’s Wolverine second behind EA Sports FC 27. Data from Ampere Analysis seems to suggest Marvel’s Wolverine physical editions did well, with 35% of sales being on disc. Nobody tell that to Sony, who continues to insist nobody wants physical anymore. Ampere’s data also estimated that Wolverine sold around 2.35 million copies in September, but this is just a rough estimate and not an official hard figure. For comparison, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sold over 5 million copies in its first 10 days, although it’s worth noting this was a sequel with much stronger reviews than old Wolverine managed.

“As a game, Marvel’s Wolverine feels tedious and sometimes flat-out exhausting, but it’s never boring and mostly fun,” Screen Rant wrote in our 8/10 review. “The end result is a good superhero game that falls a little short of perfection.”
It’s clear that PlayStation and Insomniac Games have laid the foundation for at least one Marvel’s Wolverine sequel and/or an X-Men game somewhere down the line, but has the game performed well enough? Being the top-selling game in September is undeniably impressive, but when you also consider the leaks that claim Marvel’s Wolverine cost a staggering $300 million to develop, suddenly being the best-selling game for one month isn’t really enough. Still, Marvel’s Wolverine is hardly a failure by any real measure, despite what the internet would have you believe.
The question now is what’s next for Insomniac? The studio that has essentially carried the PlayStation 5 generation on its back for the last few years is definitely cooking up a new Spider-Man game, and I’d imagine a follow-up to Marvel’s Wolverine will happen one way or the other. We’ll just have to wait and see what comes first.
