Marvel Gives Doctor Doom New Title Before Doomsday, And It's His Biggest In 64 Years
Marvel has given Doctor Doom a shocking new title ahead of Doomsday, and it is his biggest in 64 years. Throughout the course of his career, Doctor Doom has held various titles and roles. He has been the iron-fisted dictator who presides over his home country of Latveria, and was even the Sorcerer Supreme for a short while.
At the time of his introduction in Fantastic Four , Doctor Doom was unlike other villains currently appearing in comics. Prior to Doom, villains were either science or sorcery-based. A villain picked a lane and stayed in it, but Doctor Doom mastered both. This combination of technology and magic has made him one of the best villains in comics, and has brought him into conflict with nearly every major (and even many minor) Marvel heroes. Doom’s iron will has guided him to the pinnacle of the Marvel Universe.
And Doctor Doom partially owes his existence to Mephisto. Doom’s mother, herself a powerful magic user, was kidnapped by Mephisto and held prisoner in his realm. Doom’s intense studies in magic were all initially for one goal: to penetrate the barrier between worlds and rescue his mother. Even though Doom was eventually successful in liberating her, it still kicked off a feud between Victor and Mephisto.

Doctor Doom’s New Title Is The Perfect Revenge

And in Captain America , written by Chip Zdarsky and drawn by Valerio Schiti, Doctor Doom forces Mephisto to abdicate his throne. In a previous issue, Doctor Doom and Captain America were in Mephisto’s dimension, attempting to stir up a rebellion against the demon lord. After using trickery to defeat and weaken Mephisto, Doctor Doom then strikes a deal with the demon, allowing him to rule Hell.

While Captain America was understandably horrified at Doctor Doom’s actions, Victor still managed to do some good in his new role as lord of Hell. He liberated the soul of his beloved Valeria, who he had unjustly condemned to an eternity of suffering. Doctor Doom also voided all of Mephisto’s contracts, an action the ramifications of which will be felt throughout the Marvel Universe for months to come.

Doctor Doom’s revenge against Mephisto is poetic, especially in light of all the misery the demon lord has inflicted upon the Latverian monarch, as well as the Marvel Universe as a whole. Yet this being Doctor Doom, his motivations for usurping control of Hell from Mephisto are rooted in his ego. He did not cancel all of Mephisto’s deals out of the goodness of his heart: he instead did it to weaken the Lord of Hell further. What might come of Doom’s actions remains to be seen, but it may not be good.
As The Lord Of Hell, Doctor Doom Might Be Unstoppable
And while Doctor Doom’s new “reign in hell” is the latest chapter in his rivalry with Mephisto, it also represents one of the biggest shifts in the character’s status quo. As noted earlier, Doctor Doom is a true “renaissance man,” equally adept in science and magic. He pursued these studies with the goal of freeing his mother, but by the time he did, he was too far gone to permanently turn towards the side of good. After she was freed, Doom continued his schemes of conquest.
But as the new monarch of Hell, Doom is now in a position to inflict even more damage upon his enemies across the Marvel Universe. Not only has Doom found multiple weaknesses in Mephisto, keeping the dark lord incapacitated and unable to resist, but he now controls the armies of the realm as well. With a brigade of demons at his beck and call, Doctor Doom has a ready-made battle force that will answer only to him. Doom’s new demon army could easily take the place of his Doombots.
Doctor Doom’s ascension to the role of ruler of Hell is perhaps the biggest change to the character in 64 years, and in some ways represents the apex of his career.
It is also worth noting this new status quo for Doom comes right as he is about to make his MCU debut in Avengers: Doomsday. Doctor Doom’s ascension to the role of ruler of Hell is perhaps the biggest change to the character in 64 years, and in some ways represents the apex of his career. Doctor Doom is born to rule, be it Latveria or Hell, and he will use the resources of the latter to retake the former, and get revenge upon his many enemies in the Marvel Universe.
