Marseille face threat of points deduction for next season

· · 1 min read

Following a tense and recruitment-free summer transfer window, Olympique de Marseille could face provisional sanctions this winter from the National Directorate for Financial Control (DNCG), French football’s financial watchdog, for failing to comply with the requirements set out last June, reports L’Équipe.

Among the scenarios being discussed, a points deduction for next season – which would take effect if the club’s management fails to put its finances in order by 30th June 2027 – is a possibility. Nevertheless, a provisional relegation to Ligue 2, similar to the measure taken against Olympique Lyonnais in November 2025, does not appear to be on the cards.

Furthermore, given the club’s financial situation, it seems unlikely, if not impossible, that they will be able to strengthen their squad during the winter transfer window. In a difficult position, OM – currently 13th in Ligue 1 after six matchdays – risk-, on the contrary, seeing their ranks weakened yet further, whilst sales of selected players could enable the club’s management to ease the DNCG’s financial restrictions to some extent.
