Maresca: Man City players can treat my arrival as a reset

Enzo Maresca says his arrival has given all the Manchester City players a chance to reset as they all fight for their place in his squad.

Maresca has stepped into the dugout after City enjoyed a glittering decade under Pep Guardiola.

City have played two games in pre-season so far, drawing with Inter – and losing on penalties – before beating the K-League All Stars 3-1 last time out.

Maresca has given every player the opportunity to prove themselves so far, regardless of their status under Guardiola, and looks set to keep adopting that approach against Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

“The only thing I have said since I started to the players is that, for me, it’s a new reset,” Maresca said.

“All of them start at [the] same level.

“Pre-season will dictate a little bit the transfer window. This has been the same message for everyone – for me, it is a reset.

“It will be a pleasure for me to work with him.”

“It has been very good since day one. They have been very open-minded about a new manager arriving.

“We have changed some structures and some patterns, the way we play on the ball, off the ball and in general.

“This is the main change; the work ethic from the ones who have been here year after year also is important.

“These 10 days together are so important. I need a connection with them – and it’s so important for the future.”

City’s match against Atletico is their final pre-season friendly ahead of facing Arsenal in the Community Shield next Sunday.
