Manuel Neuer knows his responsibility with Jonas Urbig at Bayern Munich

· · 2 min read

Bayern Munich has Manuel Neuer for at least another season after his one-year contract extension, but his future beyond that is not yet know. Could this be his final season with the German Rekordmeister? It’s certainly possible he could be moving on after the 2026/27 season, but that’s a discussion he’ll be having with the club’s front office at some point later on this season.

Nonetheless, Bayern already has their pos-Neuer plans in place in the form of Jonas Urbig, who is the club’s natural successor to be the number one keeper once Neuer eventually leaves or at least has his minutes managed. The 23-year-old keeper joined Bayern from FC Köln in the winter of 2025 and has been a solid option for Vincent Kompany in several stints when Neuer has been unavailable for selection through injury or suspension. In total, Urbig has made 32 appearances across all competitions for Bayern and was included as a “practice keeper” in Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad for the World Cup.

As has always been the plan at the club ever since signing Urbig, Neuer acts as the youngster’s mentor and it’s been understood that the veteran will eventually start to cede minutes to the former Köln man to help get him even more ready to take over as the number one keeper. Neuer knows he has a great deal of responsibility in that regard, which is something he takes seriously.

“It’s exactly the same responsibility I’ve had for the past 1.5 years. It’s my goal, our goal that he continues developing and take the next step towards becoming the long-term at FC Bayern and also the national team. He’s played good games, he’s been calm and composed in high pressure situations. He’s definitely ready for the big stage,” Neuer recently explained to Sport1 (via @iMiaSanMia).

Even with the current keepers setup at Bayern, Neuer is still very much considered to be number one, as Vincent Kompany has previously stated this summer. “Jonas will get his minutes, also this season. This is important for his development. Manu is our number one, that’s a good constellation for us. I hope it works out like it did last season,” the Belgian manager stressed.
