Michael Carrick’s Manchester United host Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday, looking for a response after a shock 2-0 opening-day defeat to Hull City.

United have not lost to Ipswich at home in their last eight meetings, a record Carrick will want his side to lean on after a frustrating start to the season.

Tom Heaton and Manuel Ugarte remain sidelined, with Carrick suggesting Ugarte’s cruciate ligament injury could keep him out for the rest of the campaign. Carrick has confirmed Amad Diallo will miss out on Sunday.

New signing Carlos Baleba is also unavailable, with the head coach saying the midfielder has “a little ankle issue” that should keep him out for “a couple of weeks or so, maybe three weeks,” meaning he’s unlikely to feature before the international break in late September.

There is better news elsewhere. Mason Mount is back training with the squad after recovering from a foot injury sustained in pre-season and could play some part on Sunday, while Matthijs de Ligt has also returned to training following back surgery in May, though a first involvement of the season looks premature for the centre-back.

Marcus Rashford, who came off the bench against Hull after a late return from World Cup duty, is pushing for a first start, with Kobbie Mainoo also in contention to come into the XI in place of one of Youri Tielemans or Andrey Santos, who both struggled on their debuts last weekend.
