Manchester United host Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday looking for a first win of the season after a shock opening-day defeat to newly-promoted Hull City.

Ipswich arrive in confident mood, having beaten Sunderland with a stoppage-time winner on the opening weekend of their return to the Premier League.

Michael Carrick’s side finished third last season after a remarkable turnaround following his winter appointment, but were beaten by a promoted club on the opening weekend for the first time in the Premier League. Ipswich, relegated at the end of 2024-25, spent heavily over the summer to support Gary O’Neil’s first season in charge, and manager and club will be desperate to build on a result that took until November to achieve during their previous top-flight spell.

Team news

Manchester United

Tom Heaton, Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte remain sidelined, and new signing Carlos Baleba is out with an ankle issue Carrick expects to keep him out for “a couple of weeks or so, maybe three weeks.” Amad Diallo is also expected to miss out, with Carrick saying he “will be out for a little bit longer.” Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martínez and Kobbie Mainoo are all “massively in contention” to start after coming off the bench against Hull following their late returns from World Cup duty.

Ipswich Town

Azor Matusiwa (thigh) and Florentino Luis (calf) both remain out, with O’Neil saying the latter is “improving well” but “still got a bit of work to do.” Jack Taylor (knee) and Jaden Philogene (ankle) are also unavailable. New signing Exequiel Palacios could make an immediate debut, with O’Neil saying of the World Cup winner: “I’m sure you’ll see him on Sunday.”

Form

Manchester United

United were beaten by a promoted side on the opening weekend of a Premier League season for the first time, ending a run of 13 attempts without such a defeat, despite registering 21 attempts of their own at Hull. Carrick’s side have not lost to Ipswich at Old Trafford in their last eight meetings, a record they’ll be keen to draw on after a frustrating start to the campaign.

Ipswich Town

O’Neil’s side marked their Premier League return with a dramatic stoppage-time win over Sunderland, then made nine changes and still beat Leicester City in the League Cup. Marcelino Núñez has started both matches and scored twice, including a 45-yard strike, while Jack Clarke’s added-time winner against his former club could earn him a starting recall this weekend.

Manchester United predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Mazraoui, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Mainoo, Santos; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford; Cunha

Ipswich Town predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Scherpen; O’Shea, Diop, Greaves, Davis; Núñez, Lukic; Clarke, Enciso, Maeda; Emersonn
