Manchester United face Eddie Howe headache with Michael Carrick's future uncertain

· · 2 min read

Manchester United could reportedly be compelled to pay a significant compensation package to bring Eddie Howe in as Michael Carrick’s successor. Howe has emerged as the leading candidate to take the reins at Old Trafford, with Carrick’s position thrown into serious jeopardy following Sunday’s 3-0 home loss to AFC Bournemouth.

United currently occupy 16th place in the Premier League after stretching their winless streak to eight games across all competitions.

United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, is reportedly eager to bring in Howe, who departed Newcastle United in July following five years at the helm. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is also understood to favor the Englishman ahead of other potential contenders, including Julian Nagelsmann, Antonio Conte, and Fabian Hürzeler, should the club opt to dismiss Carrick.

Howe, meanwhile, is believed to be receptive to taking charge at Old Trafford. However, while United’s hierarchy are reportedly deliberating over whether to relieve Carrick of his duties ahead of their forthcoming Premier League encounter with Chelsea, securing their preferred candidate may prove considerably more complex than originally expected.

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle would be entitled to compensation should Howe return to management, with a ‘significant payout’ potentially required given the amount of time remaining on his deal at St James’ Park. Howe was reportedly earning approximately £6 million ($8 million) annually and had committed to a multi-year agreement in the summer of 2024, meaning any compensation package could stretch into the millions.

The report indicates Newcastle could be in line for a substantial windfall, particularly after permitting members of Howe’s backroom staff, including Jason Tindall, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone, to leave alongside him amid speculation they could reconvene at another club. Such expenditure would compound the considerable sums United have already paid out on managerial departures in recent years.

The club previously incurred a net severance cost of £8.2 million (around $10.9 million) following the early exit of Ruben Amorim and his coaching staff, underscoring the financial consequences of yet another potential managerial overhaul at Old Trafford, via The Express.

Several names have already surfaced as possible replacements at Old Trafford, with Nagelsmann featuring among the frontrunners. United’s head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, is also said to favor bringing in Nagelsmann, who has remained without a club since stepping down as Germany manager last summer.

However, Ratcliffe is anticipated to hold ultimate authority over any managerial hire and reportedly prefers an English candidate. According to The Sun, the INEOS billionaire is eager for United to install a homegrown manager in charge.

Should United formally pursue Howe, they would probably also need to negotiate agreements with his loyal backroom team, including assistant manager Tindall, first-team coaches Purches and Weatherstone, and sports scientist Dan Hodges. All four have collaborated with Howe throughout his tenures at Bournemouth and Newcastle.
