Manchester United considers January move for Roma defender Wesley

· · 2 min read

Manchester United is monitoring Roma defender Wesley ahead of a possible January move, according to Football Insider. The Brazil international has emerged as an option as the club assesses how to strengthen both sides of its defense during the winter transfer window.

Pete O’Rourke reports that Wesley’s versatility is a major part of United’s interest. The 23-year-old is primarily a right-sided defender but can also play on the left, giving the club an option to cover more than one position with a single signing.

The report cites Italian claims that Roma values Wesley at around £50 million. That figure is a reported valuation rather than an offer from United, which has yet to be linked with a formal bid or negotiations over a fee.

Arsenal and Newcastle United are also credited with interest. Wesley has become a regular under Gian Piero Gasperini, so a winter approach would involve trying to prise away a player already established in Roma’s first-team plans.

Roma signed Wesley from Flamengo in July 2025. He arrived with more than 100 first-team appearances for the Brazilian club and had featured at that summer’s Club World Cup before making the move to Serie A.

His senior international breakthrough came before the transfer. Wesley made his Brazil debut in a 2-1 win over Colombia in March 2025, adding experience at that level to the club football he had already played in Rio de Janeiro.

He was also included in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad announced in September, as the coach began reshaping the team after the World Cup. His continued involvement provides further context for the attention he is receiving in Europe.

For United, the attraction is the chance to add cover on both flanks without restricting the signing to one defensive system. Roma’s willingness to sell an established player midway through the season, and the size of the fee required, would be central to any attempt to turn that interest into a transfer.
