Not many expected a spectacle when India welcomed Afghanistan for a one-off test match at Mullanpur. Instead, the national side got introduced to perhaps their newest spin hero, Manav Suthar. The 23-year-old absolutely demolished the Afghans to take six wickets in the first innings, bagging the second-best debut bowling figures since 1988.

In fact, his bowling was so good that the English county side Warwickshire was impressed enough to offer him a contract for two matches. The 23-year-old could make his Bears debut against Yorkshire at Scarborough on Friday. Playing for Rajasthan domestically, the left-arm spinner from Sri Ganganagar enters county cricket on the back of 136 first-class wickets at an average of 24.89.

Suthar turned what was already a commanding India performance into a personal showcase of skill. Bowling with turn and guile on a pitch that had flattened for most others, he ended the first innings with 6/33 before returning 1/29 in the second to finish with 7/62 in the match.

Suthar’s Historic Debut Against Afghanistan

His 6/33 were the second-best bowling figures by an Indian on Test debut, behind only Narendra Hirwani’s 8-61 against the West Indies in 1988. He was also only the second Indian spinner to take a five-wicket haul on debut, after Amit Mishra’s 5-71 against Australia in 2008. His exceptional control (1.50 economy rate) set up India’s largest-ever Test victory margin (an innings and 300 runs).

Hirwani’s record, however, remains unbeaten. The leg-spinner had an otherworldly debut against a powerhouse West Indies side, taking 8/61 in the first innings and backing it up with 8/75 in the second. His match haul of 16 wickets remains the all-time world record for the best bowling figures on Test debut.

Warwickshire Contract and Title Challenge

Warwickshire are second in Division One, five points behind leaders Nottinghamshire after six matches, and will be hoping Suthar’s varied spin adds another dimension to their title push. The stint in county cricket at the very start of what already promises to be a distinguished international career is perfectly timed.

“I’m incredibly excited to be joining Warwickshire for the next two County Championship games,” Suthar said. “The team has started the season very well, so I’m hoping that I can play a part in helping them in their push for the title.” Many former Indian stars have made the County Championship their stomping grounds to prepare for the challenges of Test cricket.

This includes 2011 World Cup winner Zaheer Khan and India’s leading wicket-taker across both Test and ODI, Anil Kumble. In recent years, former Test mainstay Cheteshwar Pujara played 52 matches for Sussex, Notts, Yorkshire, and Derbyshire as he established himself as the defining no. 3 for the Indian Test side between 2014 and ’19. Now Suthar has the chance to add to that legacy.

The county club is equally excited. “We’ve played some good red-ball cricket already this season, and Manav will bring a new aspect to our bowling attack. It shows how highly he’s rated in India after his selection to their Test team last week, so it’s going to be great to have him around the group,” James Thomas, Warwickshire’s performance director, said about the signing.
