Man United eye experienced option from Premier League rivals to add goalkeeping depth

Manchester United are considering a move for Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow as they search for an experienced backup option this summer.

According to The Athletic, United have identified the 35-year-old as a possible free-agent signing, with his contract at Elland Road due to expire at the end of June.

It would be a practical move rather than a glamorous one. United are not looking for a superstar No.1 in this situation.

They need a reliable second-choice goalkeeper who understands English football, accepts the role, and can step in when required.

Leeds United are still hoping to keep the goalkeeper

Darlow’s situation is not fully settled, because Leeds are also keen to keep him.

TEAMtalk reported that Leeds have already offered him a new contract after he ended the season as Daniel Farke’s No.1.

That makes the decision interesting. Staying at Leeds could offer Darlow more stability and possibly more minutes.

Moving to United would bring a bigger club, European football and a squad role, but not guaranteed starts.

Man United have other options on their shortlist

United have also discussed Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone as an alternative.

Darlow and Johnstone are being viewed as homegrown options as United prepare for Altay Bayindir to leave.

That homegrown factor matters. United need to manage squad registration carefully, especially with European football on the calendar.

Darlow’s experience, availability on a free transfer, and low-risk profile make him a logical name to consider.

This would be smart squad planning if the wages are reasonable. Darlow is not coming in to transform United, but he could give Michael Carrick a dependable backup without using major transfer funds.

The only question is whether he wants to spend the final years of his career mostly on the bench.

If he is comfortable with that, Man United should seriously consider it.
