Malik Nabers avoids PUP list to start Giants training camp

The New York Giants are opening their training camp with some good news.

Nabers is recovering after undergoing a second surgery during the offseason, in the wake of last season’s torn ACL. His status is among the biggest question marks going into this season, as the team has expressed hope he will be ready for Week 1.

Giants head coach John Harbaugh, however, has couched expectations by noting that Nabers’ knee injury is “not simple.”

Nabers landing on the PUP list would have been a bad sign for his availability, though avoiding it doesn’t mean he’s 100% healthy either. He’s still making his way back and staying off the PUP list means he won’t be restricted in practices.

When healthy, Nabers has looked like one of the best receivers in football in his two seasons with the Giants. The former sixth overall pick earned Pro Bowl honors as a rookie and has averaged 77.6 yards per game across 19 games, a mark that would have ranked sixth-best in the NFL last season.
