Madugu wary of Malawi as Super Falcons begin WAFCON title defence

Super Falcons head coach, Justin Madugu has warned against underestimating Malawi ahead of Nigeria’s opening Group C fixture at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), stressing that every team at the tournament poses a threat.

Nigeria, the defending champions and record 10 time winners of the competition, will kick off their title defence against tournament debutants, Malawi on Tuesday.

Despite the Scorchers making their first appearance at WAFCON, Madugu insists his side will approach the encounter with caution and respect.

Malawi secured a historic qualification for the tournament after defeating Angola 2-0 on aggregate during the qualifiers, earning their maiden ticket to the continental showpiece.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Madugu said his team remains fully focused on its objectives but will not take any opponent lightly.

“Malawi may be debutants, but they are a quality side. Every team here has a purpose and ambition, so we cannot afford to underestimate anyone,” he said.

The coach added that Nigeria’s primary targets are to successfully defend their WAFCON crown and secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

“We know what we want to achieve. We want to retain the title and book our place at the World Cup. That remains our focus,” Madugu stated.

Nigeria lifted their record extending 10th WAFCON trophy last year after staging a remarkable comeback from two goals down to defeat hosts Morocco in the final.

The Super Falcons are grouped with Malawi, Zambia and Egypt in Group C.

A victory against Malawi would give the champions a strong start before facing Zambia on August 1 and Egypt in their final group-stage match on August 5.

With the tournament also serving as Africa’s qualifying route for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the stakes remain high.

The four semi-finalists will earn automatic qualification, while another African team will have a chance through the intercontinental play-offs.

Nigeria will be determined to begin their campaign with a convincing performance as they chase another continental title and a spot on football’s biggest stage.
