Madrid GP Was Statistically the Most Boring F1 Race of 2026

If Formula 1 organizers were hoping the inaugural 2026 Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid would deliver a high-octane spectacle, the actual race data paints a completely disastrous picture.

Ahead of the weekend, drivers explicitly warned that the MADRING Sur circuit’s fundamental design completely killed passing opportunities. Now that the checkered flag has fallen—with Kimi Antonelli claiming the victory—the statistics have proven the grid absolutely right.

According to the data compiled by u/BuxtonEU and shared on Reddit, the Madrid GP produced exactly four on-track overtakes after Lap 1.

To put that dismal number into perspective, you have to look at the rest of the 2026 season calendar. As highlighted in the data visualization, the pre-Madrid season average for overtakes was 61.

The season high was the Chinese Grand Prix with 101 passes, while venues like Miami (88), Japan (85), and Italy (78) provided plenty of wheel-to-wheel action.

Even Monaco—a circuit universally criticized for being a narrow, impossible-to-pass procession—registered 10 overtakes. That means the brand-new, purpose-built Madrid track produced fewer than half the overtakes of Monaco, representing a staggering 94% drop compared to the 2026 pre-race average. Only a handful of genuine moves happened all race, such as Liam Lawson managing to squeeze past Franco Colapinto.

“Monaco 2.0, But Worse”

The backlash from the Formula 1 community has been absolute and ruthless. Fans across social media platforms blasted the track layout, calling it an utter failure that offers no overtaking opportunities whatsoever.

“I’ve never appreciated Monaco more than today,” one fan wrote on Reddit, capturing the overarching sentiment. “It’s at least an iconic track with insane views and really is a spectacle. Even when it’s a procession, you have things to look at. Today was a disgrace”.

Others pointed out the depressing aesthetics of the street circuit. While Monaco offers a historic harbor backdrop, the Madrid track is heavily situated around the IFEMA exhibition center. As one commenter bluntly put it, F1 fans get “historical buildings” in Monaco, whereas “this dogsh-t track is built around a hangar”.

The criticism wasn’t limited to just the lack of racing. Trackside marshals and viewers alike criticized the abysmal logistics of the circuit, noting that unlike Monaco’s cleverly positioned cranes, Madrid lacked the heavy machinery and access points required to quickly clear stranded cars or tech-pro barriers from the track.

But the most alarming aspect for racing purists isn’t just that the inaugural event was a dud—it’s that Formula 1 is locked in for the long haul.

F1 management previously signed a massive 10-year contract to race at the Madrid venue. While minor layout tweaks could theoretically be introduced in future seasons, the fundamental spatial constraints and the heavy use of combined braking zones mean fixing the circuit’s core overtaking problem will be a massive uphill battle.

For now, the MADRING Sur holds the undisputed title of the most boring race of the 2026 season.
