Luke Bryan watches son Bo Bryan erupt for career night in statement win over rival

As the fans rolled onto the field following Battle Ground Academy’s (TN) win over Franklin Road Academy (TN) Friday night, Sept. 25, country music star Luke Bryan was one of the many Wildcat fans on the field celebrating.

A day after headlining a star-studded concert in Nashville and a day before he’s set to perform in Wisconsin, Luke Bryan was just like every other BGA parent in the stands watching their kids compete in a massive region showdown with FRA.

By the time the final whistle had sounded, Luke and every other person in the stadium had been witness to a performance for the ages as his son Bo Bryan threw for 406 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Wildcats past the Panthers 41-35 in a rematch of last season’s Division II-AA championship.

“I’m super impressed,” Luke Bryan told USA TODAY Sports. “This being against a big rival during his senior year, he’s learning as he goes. Everything that happens to him this year is the first time he’s had all these pressure situations, all the ups and downs. He came out, we got behind and he threw a pick that turned into points for them.

But for the team to battle back and for him to have such an incredible second half and for his coaches to trust him with that fourth down call, I couldn’t be prouder as a dad.”

Given who his dad is and the expectations he had to live up to this season, there aren’t many players who can claim to have had more pressure put on their shoulders than Bo Bryan. Through the first three weeks of the season, he lived up to that pressure.

Then a 21-point loss to Milton (GA) happened and the Wildcats had the next week off. Instead of letting that loss get to him, Bryan and his teammates went to work to make sure a setback like that wouldn’t happen again.

“The main message following that game was to just learn from it, build off of it and to come out tonight and compete hard,” Bo said. “We play for each other and our team bonding is out of this world. We’re all so close and we know that we’re going to fight hard for each other every day.”

That work went into Friday night’s showing and as Bo took the final knee to seal the win, the first person he hugged was his head coach Bobby Bentley.

“I played quarterback and I raised four sons, so when you have a quarterback performance like you did the week before when nothing goes right, it’s kind of an avalanche,” Bentley said. “You really feel it as a quarterback. For him to come back out and do what he did tonight, he was phenomenal.”

That confidence was on full display against FRA.

At one point, BGA trailed by 10 after Bo threw an interception that the Panthers quickly turned into a touchdown. Bo never panicked and quickly led the Wildcats on a scoring drive late in the first half.

Once the Wildcats took the lead in the second half, they seemed to have an answer for every FRA response as he continually found Maddox Porter and Maximus Curry to seal the win.

“You see the hard work that he puts in and you want the hard work to pay off,” Luke said. “Nights like tonight are when you get to celebrate that,” Luke Bryan said. “Bo is really young in his development as a quarterback because he’s been a two- or three-sport athlete his whole life. The fact that he’s been able to really turn the corner as a quarterback has been amazing to see.

It’s all about confidence being a quarterback and that clear tonight. I don’t know what the stats were tonight but to go out and see some of those big throws, those were some of the prettiest throws I’ve ever seen him throw and I’m just so proud of him.”
