LSU Practice Report Fall Camp: Day 4

Today was Day 4 of Fall Camp, and the LSU Tigers were back out on the field, with the media allowed in for about 15 minutes. The team had a walkthrough yesterday, but reporters were not allowed to be in attendance

Today’s practice was just slightly different from previous days, as the media was allowed to move around the field a little bit more. This allowed us to see some of the offensive linemen and TEs up close.

There were no team periods allowed for media access, but during some of the group work on defense, safety Faheem Delane was in with the first team along with Ty Benefield. The front four remained the same, with Richard Anderson and Deuce Geralds still anchoring the interior and Princewill Umanmielen and Jordan Ross on the edge. TJ Dottery and Whit Weeks were still the first-team linebackers, and DJ Pickett and PJ Woodland were the first-team cornerbacks.

Today, I focused most of my time along the offensive side of the ball. I started off viewing Sam Leavitt working on the timing of delayed handoffs with the running backs, but during that drill, Coach Kiffin allowed the media to move further down the sidelines in between the fields.

Once that took place, I headed toward the offensive linemen. The group was split up at one point, with the guards working together on combo blocks with Coach James Cregg and the tackles working on pulling and kicking drills with Eric Wolford. Brysten Martinez was able to showcase some real athleticism during this drill, working from the left side of the line. I did not get a chance to see Jordan Seaton do his rep, as he had already finished by the time I made it down there.

On my way toward the offensive linemen, I stopped for a moment to view the edge rushers. We talk a lot about Ty Benefield, and deservedly so, but Princewill Umanmielen needs to start getting more attention. His size, strength, elite first step, and ability to react to an offensive player’s moves with his natural instincts should make him very dominant in this aggressive defense that Blake Baker likes to run.

He will be complemented very well by Jordan Ross. These two have very high athletic ceilings but are not the same type of player. When you see Jordan Ross, LSU fans should think of him as having a skill set relatable to Arden Key. I’m not saying this is who he projects as being, but because we all are not familiar with his game, this is who I see him as when he’s out on the field.

Another interesting thing was seeing Lamar Brown with the group. All of the questions around Lamar Brown not playing in the interior should be left alone. His body now resembles that of Princewill Umanmielen. He’s a true freshman but looks like he could already be entering his third year as an SEC edge rusher.

After watching the offensive linemen, I spent time watching Trey’Dez Green run routes and seeing how they were lining him up out wide. Need I say more? Trey’Dez is an absolute weapon. His route running was very smooth, and you could see he spent time working on that during the offseason.

After that, the QBs and receivers started working on different levels of routes. Sam Leavitt would get three reps, while Husan Longstreet and Landon Clark would get one rep each.

Leavitt looks really good. The timing on the deep post throws with two of the receivers was a little—and I mean a little bit—off because he overthrew them by a step, but after those two, he was on point. There was a really nice sideline throw on an out route to Winnie Watkins, and Winnie made an excellent adjustment on the ball to complete the catch.

After viewing the QBs and WRs work together, our time was up, and we were escorted out.

There wasn’t a post practice press conference today, and there will be no practice tomorrow. The team returns to practice on Monday morning, with a press conference scheduled with Lane Kiffin and players following that practice.
