Louisville basketball's Seth Trimble files to join eligibility lawsuit

Louisville basketball signee Seth Trimble has filed paperwork to join a lawsuit in an attempt to gain a fifth year of eligibility and play for the Cardinals during the 2026-27 season.

Hans Poppe, the lawyer representing Trimble, previously confirmed to The Courier Journal that Trimble would attempt to attach his name to the suit.

The lawsuit, filed in Jefferson Circuit Court, resulted in a temporary restraining order Aug. 21, giving eligibility to 13 athletes. That list included Louisville football players Jabari Mack and D’Angelo Hutchinson, as well as former Missouri forward Mark Mitchell. Hutchinson has since entered the transfer portal and committed to Cincinnati, while Mitchell committed to Kentucky.

Trimble, a 6-foot-3 guard who appeared in 129 games over the past four years at North Carolina, entered the NCAA transfer portal at the end of his senior season. He committed to the Cardinals on Aug. 12 after playing in five NBA Summer League games with the Washington Wizards but not signing a pro contract.

A special hearing is set for 10:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, regarding UK linebacker Alex Afari Jr.‘s request to be added to the case — with a goal of him suiting up for the Wildcats this fall. Trimble, now listed as a party in the lawsuit, also is expected to be part of the hearing.

In addition, Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports reports attorneys in the case amended their complaint to request the judge hold the NCAA in contempt of court for allowing the SEC to issue a new eligibility policy that affects 13 athletes, including Mitchell.
