LOCAL ROUNDUP: Speakers make tourney semifinals

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Danville Post 210 Legion Baseball team were able to make it to Sunday at the Best of the Midwest Tournament.

The Speakers were able to get there with two wins on Saturday. Post 210 started that day with a 9-0 win over Watseka. Matthew Darling had six strikeouts in six innings and Ryan Edwards finished the game with a perfect seventh.

Cole Miller had two hits with two RBIs, while Easton Barney had three hits and an RBI, Bryson Houchens, Xander Wilson and Marvin Davis III each had an RBI and Darling had two hits.

The Speakers then beat the Madisonville Post 6 Rangers 3-0. Lyric Neal had seven strikeouts in five innings and Edwards pitched two innings and gave up only one hit.

Miller had a double and three RBIs while Cruz Dubois had two hits.

On Sunday, the Speakers were in the semifinals against the Owensboro, Ky. Post 9 Bombers and lost 7-3.

Davis had two hits and an RBI, while Wilson had an RBI, Miller had three hits and Houchens added two hits. Dubois had six strikeouts in four 1/3 innings, while Liam Parish had three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.

The Speakers are 11-4 and will hit the road again today to play Watseka at 6:30 p.m.

Junior Gold wraps up perfect weekend

TILTON — The Post 210 Junior Gold were able to finish the weekend with a 3-0 mark.

The weekend started on Friday with a 6-0 win over Watseka. Joseph Smalley had 13 strikeouts on the mound for the Junior Gold, while Ryker Dieu had three RBIs and Tate McLaughlin had one RBI.

On Saturday, the Junior Gold welcomed Eureka Post 466 and were able to win both games of a doubleheader 13-2 and 15-5.

In the first game, Dieu had three hits and four RBIs, while Owen Atwood had three hits with two doubles and three RBIs, Ivan Rodriguez, Aiven Anderson and Calen Leeman each had one RBI and Dayton Dubois had two hits. Leighton Miethe got the win with two strikeouts in five innings.

In the second game, Rodriguez had two RBIs, while Weston Church had two hits and an RBI, Atwood, Leeman, McLaughlin, Anderson and Jordan Winchester each had an RBI and Dubois had two hits.

Fletcher Clem had four strikeouts in five innings for the Junior Gold, who are 7-4 and will face Champaign Post 24 in a doubleheader on the road starting at 5 p.m.

Elite goes 2-2 for weekend

MATTOON — After winning both of its games on Friday, the Post 210 Junior Elite Speakers had a chance to add on to that over the weekend.

Saturday started well with a 9-3 win over Express Fastpitch. Eva Ronto and Deana Linares each had two RBIs for the Elite, while Ella Acton had two hits and an RBI, Lani Gondzur, Kendall Rannebarger, Ava Acton and Madyson Logsdon each had one RBI and Macy Warner had two hits. Lily Kiesel had three strikeouts in five innings.

The Elite suffered its first loss of the weekend to the Tribe Baseball and Softball Academy Wahoos 8-0 with Warner, Ava Acton and Alexa Jamison each getting a hit.

On Sunday, the Elite beat the Mattoon Pride as Jamison had three hits and two RBis, Linares had two hits and two RBIs, Kiesel had two RBIs and Gondzur, Warner, Ava Acton, Rannebarger, Ella Acton and Logsdon each had one RBI. Ronto had two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings for the win.

The Elite then faced the Wahoos again and lost 8-2. Ava Acton had the only RBI, while Kiesel took the loss.

McTagertt Tourney wraps up

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — The 19th annual McTagertt Tennis Tournament wrapped up on Sunday after three days of action at Fountain Central High School.

The tournament ended up with 18 division winners. In the Men’s open singles, Dane Baldwin beat Eddie Heinold 10-2 and in Men’s 35 singles, Elliott Franklin beat Chuck Wagoner 10-7. In Men’s Open doubles, Matt and Thomas Lemming beat Eddie and Mike Heinold 10-6, while Jason and Keith Zinkovich beat Dave Kight and Matt Lemming 10-1 in the Men’s 35 doubles.

In women’s open singles, Haley Webb beat Reagan Cox 10-5 and in women’s open doubles, CC Cox and Reagan Cox beat Shelby Mitchell and Haley Webb 10-8. In mixed doubles, Elise Webb and Chris Webb beat Lisa Wright and Tim Wright 10-5 and in family doubles Dane Baldwin and Steve Baldwin beat Douglas Webb and Chris Webb 8-6.

In the boys divisions. Warner Hopkins beat Bane Franklin 1-6 in boys 14, Jordan Archer beat Kent Calvert in boys 16 and Joel Miller beat Will Eastman 10-2 in boys 18. In doubles, Archer and Calvert beat Roman Niccum and Elliott Armstrong 10-1 in boys 16 while Austin Biddle and Piersyn Joyce won 10-7 over Cayden Grimmett and Jack Odle in boys 18.

In the girls singles, Ruby Goodrick beat Vivian Hoar 10-8 in girls 14, Jersey Peterson beat Bella Purcell 6-0, 6-0 in girls 16 and Mabel Hoar beat Elise Webb 10-2 in girls 18. In doubles, Jersey and Lilly Peterson won over Katy Faust and Teagan Pound 10-5 in girls 16 and Malah Bridwell and Webb beat CC Cox and Mabel Hoar 10-7 in girls 18.

Over $1,500 will be donated to the Evan McTagertt Memorial Scholarship. Players from Fountain, Warren, Vermillion, Parke, Vigo, Montgomery, and Tippecanoe counties participated.
