LOCAL ROUNDUP: Dans drop third in a row

SPRINGFIELD — The Danville Dans lost their third straight game in a row on Thursday, falling 8-4 to the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes.

The Dans had a 4-0 lead in the fourth with Chase Bays getting an RBI triple in the first, Carson Brady getting an RBI triple in the third, Mason McReynolds reached on a fielder’s choice in the third and Josiah Serms scored on a balk.

But the Lucky Horseshoes scored two in the fourth and three in the seventh and eighth innings to get the win with Pedro Rangel dropping to 1-1 on the season.

The Dans were coming off a 12-2 loss the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp on Wednesday.

Down 1-0 after the first, the Dans took the lead with a RBI double by Hudson Roberts and a RBI single by Chase Bays in the top of the second.

But in the bottom of the second, Illinois Valley scored six runs, highlighted by a grand slam by Drew Church to go up 7-2.

The Pistol Shrimp would add four more runs in the fourth and would get the final run in the seventh.

Cooper Pumphrey took the loss for Danville, getting five strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings, Nolan Hataway, Addison Stockham, Caden Keleminic and Declan Bowers each pitched after Pumphrey and each had one strikeout.

The Dans are 6-3 and played the Johnstown Mill Rats on Friday and will do so again today. Danville will finish the weekend on Sunday with a 4:30 p.m. game against the Terre Haute Rex.

LEGION BASEBALL

Junior Speakers split opener

TILTON — After a 20-8 loss in the first game, the Post 210 Junior Speakers Gold rebounded with a 9-6 win in the second game of a doubleheader against Champaign Post 24 Junior Legion team.

Ryker Dieu and Weston Church each had two RBIs for Post 210 in the second game, while Jordan Winchester had one RBI as the team scored eight runs in the third.

In the first game, Terrance Forman, Fletcher Clem, Trey McLaughlin and Braxton Butler each had one RBI.

The Junior Speakers are 1-1 and will face Tuscola Post 27 on Monday.

PREP BOYS GOLF

Covington fifth in sectional

ATTICA, Ind. — The Trojans finished the season in fifth place in sectional action at Harrison Hills.

Luke Holycross had a 83 to lead Covington, while Andrew Wright and Danny Smith each had a 86 and Cole Witsman added a 93.

North Vermillion was 10th with Bryson Sams getting an 88 and Seeger was 11th with Austin Roarks and Waylan Trusty each getting an 97.

HOCKEY

Iron sign another goaltender

DANVILLE — The Danville Iron is starting its run by building a foundation at goalkeeper.

The Iron announced signing goalie Travis Baron, who is from the Florida Fury 18UAA team.

“Travis has excellent technical skills, good size, and awareness of how the play is developing,” Danville goalie coach Steve Sommerfiel said. “He consistently demonstrates the work ethic and dedication we value, getting on the ice before sunrise to train alongside other goaltenders and continuously refine his game. He is a fantastic addition to our goalie group for the Iron.”

Baron is the third goalkeepers signed, joining Noah Schultz and Wyatt Czapar, who is the first signing in Iron history.
