LOCAL NOTEBOOK: Red River's Speidel, Koerner are DJGA Miss and Mr. Golf finalists

Jun. 5—GRAND FORKS — Grand Forks Red River’s Ella Speidel and Kolby Koerner have been named finalists for the Dakota Junior Golf Association’s Miss Golf and Mr. Golf honors.

The award winners will be announced at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Fargo Country Club in conjunction with the Russ Newman Junior Invitational, which features the Top 20 boys and Top 20 girls golfers from North Dakota Class A and Class B competition.

The Miss Golf finalists also include Rose Solberg of Fargo Davies and Zoe Keene of West Fargo Sheyenne.

In addition to Koerner, the other Mr. Golf finalist is Kyle Campbell of Kindred.

Speidel was the 2024 Class A state champion.

Koerner took medalist honors at the 2026 Class A state meet on Wednesday at Oxbow.

Devils Lake 2027 guard Tylie Brodina has committed to play college basketball at Minot State.

Brodina also held an offer from the University of Mary.

Brodina, a 5-foot-8 guard, is a two-time all-state selection and passed 1,000 career points last December.

The North Dakota Softball All Stars’ inaugural Hall of Fame class will be UND’s Taya Hopfauf (Dickinson) and Brooklyn Morris (Bismarck).

Hopfaul and Morris were seniors at UND this spring, leading the Fighting Hawks to a school-record 27 wins.

Hopfauf and Morris were formally inducted to the Hall of Fame on June 2 in Bismarck during the Scheels Softball All-Star Series.

Hopfauf, a catcher, is UND’s all-time leader in games played. She hit .244 in her UND career with 11 homers and 72 RBIs. She batted .290 as a senior.

Morris played in 170 games at UND, batting .198 with 39 RBIs. As a senior, she hit .258 while playing center field.

Grand Forks Central’s Lucas Fischer has committed to Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D., for track and field.

Crookston boys hockey coach Josh Hardy has stepped down from his role to spend more time with family. He was head coach of the Pirates for the last 10 years.
