LJ Phillips Jr. brings power running to Iowa

The Iowa running back room is filled with talented players. Lead rush Kamari Moulton is back, and the Hawkeyes added a coveted player out of the transfer portal.

LJ Phillips Jr. ran for nearly 2,000 yards last season at South Dakota. Now in Iowa City, he’s enjoying being surrounded by other top running backs.

“I think I just bring a little bit of intensity, I just want to set the tone immediately. I think that’s something that I’ve been working on is trying to set the tone immediately and I think that I can be that sparkplug maybe. There’s competition everywhere you go, that’s life,” Phillips Jr. said. “Nothing in life is ever given to you or handed to you so that’s just part of the job that comes with it. I think that this is a great place and I’m looking forward to competing with these guys. We have amazing running backs and to work with them is a blessing every day. It makes me better and they show me new things on how to be better and that’s so special.”

Iowa opens the year against Northern Illinois on Sept. 5.
