Liverpool star to be given fresh opportunity to save his career

· · 4 min read

Liverpool have a lot of players at their disposal.

Whether they come from the academy, have been around Anfield for a few years or, have just recently been brought in, each player has a role to play in the squad.

Indeed, some players are often favoured over others but, when those who don’t play all that often are called upon, they’re expected to have a decent impact.

Most of the time, they make a good name for themselves but, every now and then, one falls through the cracks and has to look at things from a different view.

This often leads to players being sent out on loan to try and re-find themselves and, for one Liverpool star, it seems like that is the exact thing that is about to happen.

Javier Aguirre is going to give Harvey Elliott another opportunity to prove his worth at Valencia

One player who has really disappointed Liverpool fans over the last few years is Harvey Elliott.

When Jurgen Klopp was in charge, the German saw the Englishman as his star-boy with the midfielder often being one of the first names on Liverpool’s team sheet.

However, after Klopp resigned, Elliott was left to warm the bench with Arne Slot rarely trusting him to play.

This led to him being loaned to Aston Villa and, since that deal completely failed, you’d have thought that Elliott would’ve learned his lesson this time around.

But, again, he’s failed to meet expectations with the 23-year-old actually turning up to Valencia out of shape.

Many questions were then asked about his future with the La Liga outfit but, now, thanks to an update from Diario AS, Valencia’s new manager, Javier Aguirre looks likely to give the attacking-midfielder a brand new opportunity to save his career.

“The least urgent work, but perhaps the most important, is the emotional one,” they wrote.

“Elliott has left England for the first time, where another culture, language and climatology prevails. Far from home, the player loaned by Liverpool must adapt to something new and Aguirre already highlighted in his presentation in the press room the value that close contact with the footballer has for him on a daily basis, his concerns and his circumstances.

“In the case of a player who aspired to be a star at Anfield three seasons ago and who must now recover after a serious injury and an unfortunate experience at Aston Villa, Javier Aguirre’s emotional work with the player takes on vital importance.

“Tactical restart: a new opportunity. Finally, at the tactical level Elliott starts from the same point as the rest.

“Aguirre has been highlighted by his former players as a coach who adapts to the characteristics of his players instead of trying to couple them to a preconceived idea and there the English can have a place with a role that can give him his space between lines even if it is starting from the side.

“It remains to be seen, in any case, if the football idea that the Mexican has for Valencia based on his analysis of the squad matches the characteristics of the Englishman.”

Harvey Elliott must prove to Liverpool that he’s still the player they saw in the Under-21 Euro’s last summer

The fact that Villa basically wasted a season of Elliott’s career certainly won’t have helped his development.

The midfielder was coming off the back of a rather impressive tournament with England’s Under-21’s where he stole the show.

In fact, his performances led his country to winning the entire thing.

From this point, it felt like his next move would be his forever destination but, for one reason or another, Unai Emery didn’t want to keep him around.

This led to Elliott only making nine appearances throughout the entire 2025-26 season and, sent his career massively off track.

With Andoni Iraola coming in, some people thought he’d be handed another chance at Liverpool but, instead, he’s been sent out on loan again with this quite literally being his last chance to prove his worth.

Valencia don’t have a buy-option in their deal for Elliott and, since he’ll only have a year left on his Liverpool contract, it’s now or never for the Englishman.

Obviously, there’s not a lot that the Reds can do to encourage Elliott but, if he can re-find his form and prove his worth, he could be in with a chance of starting for Liverpool again, especially if Florian Wirtz does end up getting sold to Bayern Munich.
