Liverpool eye £60m January move as problems in midfield grow for Iraola

Liverpool are already considering how to strengthen their midfield in January, with Monaco star Lamine Camara emerging as a serious option for Andoni Iraola.

The Reds have made an uneven start to the Premier League season, winning just one of their opening four matches and drawing the other three.

While they remain unbeaten, their inability to consistently control games has become an early concern, particularly in midfield.

Camara, 22, is now being discussed internally as Liverpool explore possible solutions before the winter window.

Liverpool discussing January move for Camara

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Liverpool’s midfield has become an area requiring attention and claimed Camara is firmly on their radar.

“Liverpool need to sign a new midfielder, that has become clear,”

“Their current options have not been good enough at the start of the season and it’s beginning to become a major concern for them because they can’t control games.

“They’ve got some good players in there, but I’ve said for a while, they’re all a bit the same in terms of what they offer to the team and they need somebody new and fresh.

“Lamine Camara is a name that has been discussed behind the scenes, not just at Liverpool but at a lot of clubs, and he’s being put into that top bracket of midfielders.

“Liverpool will be keeping an eye on how he gets on for Monaco, but there is definitely a deal to be done as we saw when he nearly joined Chelsea.

“If these midfield issues keep causing them problems, I have no doubt they will want to step up those plans, and I can certainly see a move happening when the January window opens.”

There is further evidence that Liverpool’s interest is genuine. Football Insider reports that Monaco have increased their asking price to around £60 million after Camara’s proposed £47m move to Chelsea collapsed late in the summer window.

Camara could give the Reds something different

Camara makes sense because Liverpool’s problem is not necessarily a lack of talented midfielders.

Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai all bring quality, but Liverpool have sometimes lacked a midfielder capable of controlling transitions while still carrying the ball forward aggressively.

Camara could offer exactly that combination.

At 22, he would also fit Liverpool’s preference for players who can improve immediately while retaining significant long-term value. The £60m price is substantial, particularly for a January deal, but Monaco’s willingness to negotiate in the summer suggests an agreement is possible.

If Liverpool’s midfield continues to struggle for control over the next few months, Camara could quickly move from a player being monitored to one of the club’s biggest winter priorities.
