Live Q&A: How a 23-year-old with no experience built a global toy company

The first toy Ronnen Harary sold was a sawdust-filled head, covered with a nylon stocking, and sprinkled with grass seed.

When watered, the seed grew to look like hair.

Today, the company he cofounded in 1994 has grown from selling a single product to representing some of the hottest toy brands and generating $2.1B in revenue last year.

According to Harary in his new book, “No Experience Necessary,” that’s the wrong question to ask. “If any aspiring entrepreneur out there wants to learn from and emulate my success, the important thing to know is not how I did it.

What’s important is when I did it,” he writes. “If you asked me to build Spin Master again, to do it all over from scratch, I couldn’t.

Even with all the capital and experience I’ve accrued, it wouldn’t be possible, because I no longer have the one thing I had then: my youth.”Business Insider’s Sarah E.
