Lions WR Jameson Williams investigated for assault, won't be charged

Police investigated Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams this month after a woman accused him of assaulting her, but Oakland County prosecutors have declined to issue any charges.

“The Novi Police Department thoroughly investigated the alleged Aug. 6 incident after it was first reported in September,” Jeff Wattrick, spokesman for the Oakland County Prosecutor, told the Free Press in a statement Wednesday Sept. 30.

“The investigation included a review of statements, photos, videos, and communications between the alleged victim and Jameson Williams. Investigators also sought additional information from the alleged victim. Based on the facts presented to us at this time, the Novi Police and our office jointly concluded that there is no cause to file charges against Mr. Williams.”

Wattrick said the office takes all allegations of domestic violence seriously.

“While this matter involves a public figure, it was handled with the same consideration as any other,” Wattrick said.

Novi Police Commander Robert Manar confirmed that officers were dispatched Sept. 10 to investigate the incident at Williams’ home in southwest Oakland County. He declined to provide other details of the incident.

The Lions said Wednesday they were aware of the investigation but declined further comment.

Williams, the Lions’ No. 2 receiver and one of the NFL’s top deep threats, was roundly praised for his strong training camp but is off to a slow start this season.

He has 10 catches for 127 yards through three games and had three drops in the Lions’ season-opening win over the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 13, three days after the investigation.

“Listen, nobody’s had a better camp than Jamo this year − a spring, a camp,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said in a radio interview Sept. 15. “He’s going to be fine and we get him a couple of balls here, a couple of throws, let him take off and he’s going to be just fine, so I’m not concerned at all.”

Williams followed up a four-catch, 45-yard performance against the Saints with two catches for 33 yards in a Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Last week, the Lions made a concerted effort to get Williams more involved in the offense early, throwing him passes on two of their first six plays. He finished with four catches for 49 yards and has yet to score a touchdown this year.

The 12th pick of the 2022 NFL draft, Williams has had an up-and-down NFL career. He missed most of his rookie year while recovering from a college knee injury and served a four-game suspension in 2023 for violating the NFL’s gambling policy but has two straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons and signed a three-year, $83 million extension last fall.

In 2024, Williams avoided prosecution when police pulled over a car in which he was a passenger and found two guns in the vehicle. The guns were legally registered but Williams did not have a concealed pistol license.
