Lille completes loan signing of Mamelodi Sundowns defender Thato Sibiya

Mamelodi Sundowns have officially confirmed the departure of 20-year-old defender Thato Sibiya to French Ligue 1 club LOSC Lille on a season-long loan with an option to buy, according to iDiski Times. Sibiya has already joined his new club ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Sundowns released a short farewell statement rather than detailing the financial terms of the move, saying simply: “A new challenge awaits as Thato heads out on loan. Wishing you a successful spell and all the best.” South African outlet Kick Off had reported the move closing in days earlier, describing Lille’s interest as tied directly to Sibiya’s long-term development rather than an immediate first-team need.

Sibiya made just four first-team appearances for Sundowns, but arrives at Lille with a notable pedigree for his age. He was part of South Africa’s title-winning squad at the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations and represented his country at the U20 World Cup in Chile. He spent time in the DStv Diski Challenge, Sundowns’ development league, before this move, and departed for France directly after the club’s preseason camp in Austria.

Sibiya becomes the third notable departure from Sundowns this transfer window, following Peter Shalulile’s move at the expiry of his contract and Terrence Mashego’s loan to Stellenbosch FC. For Sundowns, a club that has increasingly positioned itself as an exporter of South African talent to Europe, sending a teenager with limited senior minutes to a Ligue 1 club on a development-focused loan fits a pattern the club has leaned into rather than resisted.

For Lille, the move is speculative by design. The option to buy lets the French club evaluate Sibiya over a full season in a European environment before committing to a permanent transfer, a low-risk way to assess a player whose ceiling is still largely unproven at senior level.
