LG allocation: Osun NLC orders three-day sympathy strike
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Osun State Council, has directed all its affiliate unions to embark on a three-day sympathy strike in solidarity with the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, over the continued withholding of local government statutory allocations.
The directive was contained in a statement jointly signed by the NLC State Chairperson, Christopher Abimbola Arapasopo, and the State Secretary, Victor O. Amusan.
According to the directive, “the industrial action followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government and Osun State Government over the unresolved dispute surrounding local government allocations.”
The labour congress said its demands remained unmet despite the ultimatum, adding that it had exhausted all reasonable avenues to secure a resolution of the matter.
“Following the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government and Osun State Government over the continued withholding of Local Government statutory allocations, the Congress regrets to inform all affiliate unions that the issues raised remain unresolved,” the statement said.
The NLC disclosed that the decision to embark on the sympathy strike was reached during an emergency meeting of its State Executive Council, SEC, held on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
“Consequently, having exhausted all reasonable avenues and in accordance with the resolutions reached at the emergency meeting of the State Executive Council, all affiliate unions of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Osun State Council, are hereby directed to proceed on the three-day sympathy strike,” the statement added.
The congress scheduled the commencement of the industrial action for midnight on Sunday, 8 November, with the strike expected to last until midnight on Wednesday, November 11, 2026.
It directed all affiliate unions to communicate the decision to their members in writing and ensure full compliance across their respective workplaces throughout the period of the strike.
The labour body also warned that any affiliate union found deliberately working against or undermining the directive would face disciplinary action in accordance with the provisions of the congress.
“Any union found deliberately working against or undermining this directive shall face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the provisions of the Congress,” the statement warned.
Explaining the reason for the solidarity action, the NLC said the hardship confronting NULGE members was a collective concern of the entire labour movement, insisting that workers must demonstrate unity in protecting their rights and welfare.
“The continued hardship confronting our comrades in NULGE is a collective concern of the entire labour movement, and our response must reflect our shared commitment to workers’ rights, dignity, welfare and economic security,” the statement said.
The congress urged all affiliate unions to demonstrate maximum solidarity and commitment to the industrial action while reiterating its call for the protection of workers’ rights and welfare.
