Lazio contacts Mauro Icardi over Serie A return

· · 2 min read

Lazio has contacted Mauro Icardi about a possible free transfer, but the striker’s preference for Champions League football has left the move uncertain.

The 33-year-old is available without a transfer fee after leaving Galatasaray at the end of his contract. SoccerNews covered Icardi’s departure from the Turkish club in July, when a return to Italy was already emerging as one of his possible options.

Lazio has now made contact, although there is no reported contract proposal or agreement. The Rome club cannot offer Champions League football this season, which may prevent the talks from progressing unless Icardi changes his priorities.

His status as a free agent makes the move financially possible from a transfer-fee perspective. The salary would require a separate negotiation.

Icardi earned approximately €6 million net per season at Galatasaray, and Gazzetta identified lower wage expectations as a requirement for a Serie A return. Lazio would be unlikely to match the terms of his previous contract.

The Argentine still produced 14 league goals during his final campaign in Turkey, despite starting only 12 of his 31 appearances. That return showed he can remain effective inside the penalty area even when his playing time is managed.

Icardi knows Serie A well from his spells with Sampdoria and Inter. He scored 124 goals in 219 appearances for Inter, captained the club and finished as the league’s leading scorer twice.

Lazio would be signing a striker whose game depends on movement and finishing rather than speed. Icardi rarely spends long periods carrying the ball, but he has built his career around finding space between central defenders and converting chances with few touches.

His age, salary and recent injury history would make a long contract risky. A shorter agreement could give Lazio an experienced scoring option without committing a transfer fee, especially if Icardi is prepared to accept a reduced salary.

The Champions League question remains the main obstacle. Contact has established Lazio’s interest, but Icardi can continue waiting for a club involved in that competition because he is not restricted by a transfer deadline in the same way as a contracted player.

Status: Lazio has contacted free agent Mauro Icardi, but no offer or agreement has been reported. The striker prefers a club playing in the Champions League, leaving the possible move uncertain.
