LAWMA demolishes illegal structures on Lagos–Badagry Expressway

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, says it has cleared illegal structures and activities along the Alaba Rago setback on the Lagos–Badagry Expressway.

The Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday while giving an update on operations carried out along the Alaba Rago corridor.

According to him, the removal of unauthorised traders, squatters and makeshift structures reflects the Lagos State Government’s strict stance against environmental abuse and improper waste disposal practices.

He explained that the enforcement became necessary due to continued indiscriminate dumping of refuse, obstruction of sanitation activities, and unlawful occupation of the highway setback by traders and squatters.

Gbadegesin noted that the exercise is aimed at restoring order, improving sanitation compliance, and safeguarding public infrastructure along one of the state’s busiest transport routes.

He maintained that road setbacks are not intended for commercial activities, residence or any form of encroachment, warning that such practices would no longer be tolerated.

“The government will continue to enforce environmental laws and prevent activities that undermine structured waste management and environmental sustainability across Lagos State,” he said.

He further advised traders and residents to make use of designated markets and approved waste disposal systems in the state.

According to him, environmental responsibility and adherence to regulations remain essential to achieving a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.

The LAWMA boss explained that the enforcement operation was jointly carried out with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.

He added that the exercise followed the expiration of a three-day notice issued to occupants of the affected area to vacate or comply with sanitation regulations.

During the operation, several carts used by illegal waste handlers and cart pushers were confiscated as part of efforts to curb indiscriminate dumping and strengthen organised waste management practices in the area.

Gbadegesin reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to sustained collaboration with relevant agencies to maintain environmental order and reinforce sanitation enforcement across the state.
