LASU Law Graduate Secures $45,000 Canadian Scholarship for Graduate Studies

A graduate of the Lagos State University (LASU) Faculty of Law, David Akinwunmi, has secured admission with scholarship and tuition support to pursue graduate studies at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Akinwunmi received the offer just months after completing his Bachelor of Laws degree at LASU. He was awarded the Faculty of Graduate Studies Scholarship and the Law Foundation Scholarship, with a combined value of approximately CAD $45,000 over two years.

He has since commenced his graduate programme in Canada.

Congratulating the law graduate, the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Distinguished Professor Ibilola Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, described the achievement as a reflection of the quality of education provided by the university and the diligence of its students.

The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the university community, said Akinwunmi’s transition from LASU’s Faculty of Law to a fully funded graduate programme abroad demonstrated the institution’s commitment to producing graduates capable of competing on the global stage.

“At LASU, we are proud to count him among our graduates, and we wholeheartedly wish him a fruitful and impactful period of study,” she said.

At the University of Victoria, Akinwunmi’s research will focus on a comparative analysis of Nigeria’s and Canada’s tax laws and tax administration, particularly the incorporation of Indigenous tax principles into Canada’s fiscal system.

His study will also examine lessons Nigeria could draw from the Canadian experience as the country continues its tax reform process.

A key area of interest in his research is how culturally familiar and acceptable administrative approaches could be deployed to encourage voluntary tax compliance among citizens.

The LASU Vice-Chancellor noted that Akinwunmi’s scholarship adds to the growing number of the university’s alumni making significant contributions to scholarship and professional practice internationally.

She reaffirmed LASU’s commitment to producing graduates equipped with the knowledge, skills and values required to contribute meaningfully to public life and academic development both in Nigeria and abroad.

The university described Akinwunmi’s accomplishment as another indication of the global opportunities available to its graduates and a source of pride for the LASU community.
