Lampard believes Haji Wright ready for Premier League

The 2026-27 Premier League season begins next week, and 20 teams enter with dreams renewed for the new year. For Coventry City, who earned promotion to the Premier League after winning the EFL Championship, it will be a chance to compete in the top flight for the first time since the 2000-01 season. And USMNT forward Haji Wright will be a big part of their offense this season.

Wright was one of the major factors behind Coventry’s promotion last season, with 18 goals and 2 assists in 40 appearances for the Sky Blues across all competitions. However, he struggled to find any playing time for the USMNT during the 2026 World Cup, with just two minute-long appearances logged for the tournament.

Still, Coventry has relied on him to score goals, and he’s done that since he arrived there in August 2023. In 124 total appearances, he’s scored 49 goals and added 11 assists. It’s that kind of production that head coach Frank Lampard feels has prepared Haji Wright for the rigors of the Premier League.

“When you come into a job, you evaluate the talent in the squad and the need for goals at the top end of the pitch. Haji already had a record as such,” Lampard said, speaking exclusively to Stars & Stripes FC. “He was playing on the left wing sometimes under the previous manager, but I felt quite quickly that he’s a No. 9 and he prefers to be in that position too. I think it makes the most of his talents and attributes, with his speed, size and ability to run in behind defenses. It will be a big test for him, as with all the players, because there’s a big gap with the Premier League. They must be focused on bridging that gap with belief. I think Haji absolutely has the talent to succeed here in the Premier League.”

For Lampard, the hope is that Wright is able to continue his goal production to help keep Coventry in the top flight. Most teams that are promoted to the Premier League struggle in that first season, with a big percentage of them getting relegated back to the Championship after one year. Coventry hope to dodge the relegation slide and do what they can to stay afloat. And for Wright, it’s a chance to show that he is a dependable striker in one of the best leagues in the world and that he can produce against some of the best defenses on the planet.

Coventry have a tall task ahead of them, as they open up the season on the road on August 21st to defending Premier League champions Arsenal. Three of their first four matches will come against teams that finished in the top 8 in last season’s table: Arsenal, Manchester City, and Brighton & Hove Albion. It will truly be a big test for Haji Wright and the Sky Blues as they prepare for their first Premier League season in 25 years.
