Lamine Yamal scores first World Cup goal for Spain, Mohamed Salah inspires Egypt and Kevin Pina scores stunner as Cape Verde do it again

Lamine Yamal announced his arrival at World Cup 2026 on Sunday with a goal after just 11 minutes of his first start against Saudi Arabia. La Roja looked a different team with the Barcelona teenager back in the starting XI after injury and went on to cruise to a 4-0 win.

World Cup debutants Cape Verde sprinkled more magic over the tournament by picking up another impressive point. After pulling off a huge shock by holding Spain in their opener, the Blues Sharks made more waves by drawing with Uruguay. A place in the knockout stages is not out of the question now.

Yamal made his first start of World Cup 2026 against Saudi Arabia and took very little time to get his name on the scoresheet. Mikel Oyarzabal fizzed in a cross from the left and Yamal slid in at the far post to score his first ever World Cup goal.

Spain quickly made it 2-0 from a corner. Aymeric Laporta flicked on a wayward shot by Dani Olmo to Mikel Oyarzabal to fire home.

Three minutes later, Oyarzabal added his second of the match. The Real Sociedad striker cushioned a volley home from close range to make it 3-0 after just 23 minutes.

Saudi Arabia held out for the rest of the half but conceded again at the start of the second in unfortunate circumstances when goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais’ save hit defender Hassan Al Tambakti and rolled into the back of the net. The goal sealed a thumping win for Spain and put La Roja back on track after a disappointing opening game.

Iran’s game with Belgium failed to produce a goal but didn’t lack for incident in Los Angeles. Mehdi Taremi thought he had given Iran the lead when he slotted home from a well-worked free-kick but saw the goal ruled out for a narrow offside after a VAR check.

Belgium failed to impress again and made life even more difficult for themselves when they were reduced to 10 men after Nathan Ngoy received a red card in the 66th minute. However, Iran couldn’t take advantage to grab the win and both teams know victory in their final Group G game will guarantee a spot in the last 32.

Another day, another Cape Verde shock as the World Cup debutants made it two points out of two games with a 2-2 draw against Uruguay.

Kevin Pina put Cape Verde fans in dreamland by smashing home the team’s first ever World Cup goal with a free-kick from range. A moment that will live long in the memory.

Uruguay hit back just before half time when Cape Verde defender Sidny Lopes Cabral inadvertently flicked a cross back towards his own goal and Maxi Araujo took full advantage by diving low to equalise.

Two minutes later, Uruguay were ahead. Araujo turned provider for Agustin Canobbio to turn home and gift Marcelo Bielsa’s side the lead heading into half-time.

Yet Cape Verde would not to be denied and equalised on the hour. Helio Varela took advantage of a mistake at the back to latch onto a loose pass, took a great touch to take it past the onrushing goalkeeper and then had the simple task of slotting into an empty net.

Sunday’s final game saw Mohamed Salah in inspirational mood as Egypt finally ended a long wait to win their first ever game at a World Cup finals by beating New Zealand 3-1. Yet the Pharoahs had to do it the hard way as New Zealand took the lead when Finn Surman headed home a corner from Tim Payne.

Egypt came roaring back with three goals in the space of 24 minutes in the second half to grab a vital three points. The equaliser came when Mostafa Zico headed home Mohamed Hany’s cross to get the comeback started.

Salah then swapped passes with Zico before firing low into the corner to put Egypt ahead. The Liverpool legend was not done there either and sealed the victory by sending in a corner for Trezequet to home home Egypt’s third and final goal.
