LaLiga: What Diego Simeone said about Ademola Lookman after Atletico’s 2-1 win over Real Madrid

Atletico Madrid manager, Diego Simeone, has spoken about Super Eagles forward, Ademola Lookman following his performance during their 2-1 triumph over Real Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Sunday evening.

The Nigerian international was introduced for the final 23 minutes against Los Blancos, coming on as a substitute for Álex Baena.

Atletico Madrid secured a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in the first Madrid derby of the La Liga season, with Alejandro Grimaldo and Jonathan David scoring in the 53rd and 59th minutes, respectively, before Antonio Rüdiger reduced the deficit in the 89th minute.

Lookman demonstrated threatening play following his introduction, displaying considerable potential in offensive situations and providing energy to Atletico’s attacking movements, although he did not score.

Simeone expressed satisfaction with the collective performance of his squad and acknowledged the contributions of the substitute players, notably Lookman.

He was quoted by Fichajes as saying: “I feel proud. We had talked about teamwork. Not just the ten who started, we needed Koke’s talent, a bit more freshness from Julián, for Lookman to come on and perform better than he did…

“But I have no doubt that the team’s collective effort was a consequence of the kind of game we wanted to play.”

Lookman has registered one goal in the 2026-27 La Liga campaign, with his sole goal coming against Sevilla on matchday three.

The former African Footballer of the Year has been selected for the Super Eagles squad for their forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
