Lagos govt announces two-week traffic diversion for Kara Bridge repairs

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has alerted motorists to an impending partial traffic disruption along the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as the Federal Ministry of Works begins rehabilitation of the bridge.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Mrs Bolanle Ogunlola, the repair work involves the replacement of the bridge’s expansion joint and is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, lasting for two weeks.

The ministry said the project would require a temporary reduction of the existing four-lane carriageway to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to create a safe working area for construction personnel.

As a result, motorists have been advised to expect partial traffic delays around the Kara axis throughout the duration of the project.

The statement noted that moderate traffic congestion is anticipated around the Fatgbems Turn as some road users may make U-turns or divert to alternative routes to avoid delays. However, traffic heading towards Ibadan beyond the Fatgbems Turn is expected to move with minimal disruption.

The ministry urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead, explore alternative routes where possible and comply with traffic advisories issued during the rehabilitation period to minimise delays.

Road users were also advised to obey traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic management personnel who will be deployed along the corridor to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.

The ministry appealed for public understanding and cooperation, noting that the rehabilitation project is aimed at improving the safety, durability and overall condition of the Kara Bridge for the benefit of all road users.
