La Salle closes strong to claim 20th boys RIIL track championship
PROVIDENCE – La Salle, Barrington and Bishop Hendricken engaged in the expected three-team battle for the boys outdoor track and field state title, and it was the Rams who came up with the required finishing kick.
Late victories in 200 meters and closing 4×400 relay pushed La Salle clear of its main rivals on a steamy Saturday afternoon at Brown Stadium. Garrett Giroux-Pezzullo led the way with four gold medals as the Rams collected 128 team points, enough to remain in front of the Eagles (115) and Hawks (96).
Jalen Moseley sweeping the hurdle events, Judah Mullings capturing the pole vault and a 4×100 relay time that matched a state record and set a new meet standard were the highlights for La Salle, which took home its 20th crown overall and third since 2022. Portsmouth closed fourth with 31 points, and the tandem of South Kingstown and East Providence tied for fifth with 30 points.
“The team, we all succeeded in great ways,” Moseley said. “I appreciate everyone putting their all into it. It’s a big blessing to be with a great group of guys and come out with a win.”
Virtually nothing separated the top three until the last handful of events. Giroux-Pezzullo saw an update prior to toeing the line for 200 – the Rams were tops with 89 points, Bishop Hendricken was second with 88, and Barrington sat in third with 87. That helped motivate the senior to clock a winning time of 21.88 seconds, and La Salle picked up a handful of additional team points thanks to Moseley (fourth) and Jackson Alves (eighth).
“Right before my 200 I heard that score, so I knew me and the boys had to come in and pull something crazy out,” Giroux-Pezzullo said. “It’s all a team effort. Get a bunch of little points here and there, and we came out on top.”
Giroux-Pezzullo already had a pair of wins to his credit, defending his crown in the 400 and running a leg on a 4×100 unit that clocked a 41.86 to match a state record set by Central in 2016. Abrahim Ghamrawi, Giroux-Pezzullo, Antonio Bearden and Alves also bettered the meet mark of 41.94 set by the Rams in 2024, and the cherry on top came in the 4×400. Brad LaForest, Casey Ashe, Alves and Giroux-Pezzullo won by more than three seconds in 3:21.64, the end of a tense day on the East Side.
“I’m pretty hard on myself,” Giroux-Pezzullo said. “I feel like I have to be in a sport like this. Every little practice matters – every collective effort to get a final result.”
Moseley repeated with double gold in the hurdles, clocking a 14.09 in the 110 and a 37.90 in the 300. He remains the only Rhode Island boy to crack the 38-second mark in the longer distance after setting the state record at this meet last year. Moseley added 13 more team points in his other two events to help La Salle pile up its total.
“I would definitely say I feel a little comfortable,” Moseley said. “Over time, repping out the 300 and 110 hurdles, I just think about being comfortable and staying consistent.”
Moseley was denied a third gold by Barrington senior Caleb Satisfield, who soared 23-4 on his final long jump attempt to beat Moseley by 3 inches and set a new personal best. Satisfield also added gold in the high jump as the only athlete in the field to clear the bar at 6-6. His 20 team points in those two events came alongside Patrick Trainor’s win in the 100, Henry Stockwell’s triumph in the 800 and an opening 4×800 relay victory by Stockwell, Brady Andrew, Colby Napolitano and Sam Spencer.
“[Satisfield is] a great jumper – great athlete, great basketball player,” Moseley said. “It’s really a blessing to be able to compete against him. I’m really grateful for him and hope he goes far.”
Colby Flynn, David Hayes and Fred Russell offered a lesson in team tactics while going 1-2-3 in the 1,500 for the Hawks. Russell kicked on the backstretch during the final lap to soften up the field, and Flynn went over the top from there, winning in 4:01.14. Dimitri Johnson added gold in the hammer with a top-10 national mark this season of 221-9.
Sean Gray offered the highlight for the Patriots with his solo pursuit for glory in the 3,000, breaking away early and racing against the clock to the finish. His time of 8:18.90 set a new state and meet record, wiping out Devan Kipyego and Ryan Meehan, respectively, in the process. Gray waved his right hand to the crowd down the stretch, asking for some noise while he crossed the line nearly 15 seconds ahead of the pack.
“I was pretty tired,” Gray said. “Coming to that line it was a little quieter than I was hoping. Gave a little wave – told everyone to get loud. I finished off pretty strong.”
Kai Sorlien repeated as the javelin champion and scored in multiple events to help power the Rebels into their tie with the Townies. Kaeden Manni joined the day’s two-time winners by sweeping the discus and shot put for Smithfield, accounting for 20 of its 27 team points and a top-10 place. Kevin Barker took home the triple jump title for Toll Gate, as his distance of 43-11 was nearly a foot longer than the rest of the field.
