Kyle Larson’s Phoenix Nightmare Ends in Garage as Championship Lead Takes a Hit
No. 5 Chevrolet Fails to Finish After Disastrous Afternoon
Kyle Larson’s difficult day at Phoenix Raceway went from bad to worse Sunday, as the NASCAR Cup Series championship leader was forced to take his No. 5 Chevrolet to the garage and end his race early.
Larson entered the Freeway Insurance 500 with a 49 point advantage over Denny Hamlin in the Chase standings. However, what looked like an opportunity to protect that lead quickly turned into a nightmare for the Hendrick Motorsports driver.
Larson Struggles From the Start
The warning signs appeared during Saturday’s qualifying session, when Larson could manage only 22nd on the starting grid. He struggled to find the speed he needed throughout Sunday’s race, falling behind several of his championship rivals.
A two-tire strategy late in the opening stage failed to produce the desired results, and Larson finished the stage outside the points. His struggles continued in the second stage as he lost additional positions and fell a lap behind the leaders.
Larson eventually returned to the lead lap during a caution, but he still could not find the pace necessary to move toward the front. His frustration was evident over the team radio as the No. 5 team searched for answers.
Garage Visit Ends Larson’s Afternoon
The situation ultimately became even worse when Larson’s car was taken to the garage, ending his afternoon without a finish. Instead of salvaging valuable points, the championship leader was left watching from the sidelines while his competitors continued racing.
The DNF represents a major setback for Larson at a critical stage of the season. Joey Logano, Christopher Bell, Chase Briscoe and Hamlin all collected important stage points, creating an opportunity to cut into Larson’s championship advantage.
Championship Battle Suddenly Changes
Larson’s strong points cushion had provided some breathing room entering Phoenix, but a race-ending problem changes the outlook considerably.
With the Chase continuing toward its conclusion, Larson and his team must regroup quickly. After an afternoon marked by poor speed, mounting frustration and an eventual trip to the garage, the No. 5 team faces serious pressure to bounce back in the remaining races.
