KPop Demon Hunters: Everything We Know About The Hunters Before HUNTR/X

· · 5 min read

KPop Demon Hunters introduced the world to HUNTR/X, a girl band who are secretly Hunters—the latest in a long line of singers whose magic protects the world from demons. The characters of KPop Demon Hunters were wonderfully well done, with Rumi serving as the main focus; a Hunter who bears the patterns of a demon, she’s HUNTR/X’s leader and a true force to be reckoned with. Over the course of the movie, Rumi was forced to confront the truth of who she really is.

Watching KPop Demon Hunters, I found myself eerily reminded of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The core concept is the same there; the world is in danger of supernatural invasion, and today’s heroes inherit the burden of standing in its defense. But where Buffy spent some time revealing the history of the Slayers, KPop Demon Hunters gives us a quick summary. Even better, The Art of KPop Demon Hunters reveals even more.

The Origin Of The Hunters

KPop Demon Hunters sells its concept quickly, in a voice-over by Celene (a retired Hunter, who I’ll discuss in more detail later). We get a gorgeous animated scene flashing back to ancient Korea. “Demons have always haunted our world,” Celene says, “stealing our souls and channeling strength back to their king, Gwi-Ma. Until heroes arose to defend us. Born with voices that could drive back the darkness.” According to Celene, Hunters serve two purposes: they battle the demons, while their songs unite the people around them and thus strengthen resistance to the demons’ isolating power.

This connection is key to the Honmoon. Hunters appear to channel the unity of people into a magical barrier they place around the entire world, one that holds the demons at bay. Some demons can get through—it’s why the Saja Boys emerged—but full-scale invasion is impossible without breaking the Honmoon. The concept art reveals these first Hunters were active in the 1600s, so presumably the demons were loose on the world before then.

According to The Art of KPop Demon Hunters, visual development artist Won Sul Hyn dove into his personal archives when designing these first Hunters. They were inspired by his mother, a Korean shaman. “Much of it was a metaphorical illustration drawn directly from my unique, formative memories of her,” he explained. “Witnessing her incredibly charismatic and spiritual performances during Gut, ceremonies filled with live music, driven by the powerful rhythms of Korean percussion.”

Hunters Don’t Have A Long Lifespan

The book features art of Demon Hunters throughout the ages, with designs for the 1600s, 1800s, 1920s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1980s, and 1990s. Interestingly, every trio of Hunters follows the same pattern, suggesting there’s a sort of mystical archetype in play; that fits with the Demon Hunters’ weapons, which are summoned mystically.

Notice that the Hunters don’t seem to live long; each iteration seems to last a decade, sometimes two at most. It’s unclear whether modern Hunters have a shorter lifespan than their predecessors, perhaps indicating Gwi-Ma and his demons have become more desperate as the centuries have passed.

The Sunlight Sisters Were Hunters Before HUNTR/X

We don’t know much about the different girl bands who preceded HUNTR/X. Only one has been identified by name; the Sunlight Sisters, who consisted of Celene, Rumi’s mother Mi-yeong Ru, and an unnamed woman. They were the Hunters of the early 2000s, and their time seems to have ended after Rumi’s mother died. Rumi was apparently an infant at that time, which means the Sunlight Sisters met with tragedy by the late 2000s.

This leaves an interesting question: who served as Hunters between the Sunlight Sisters and HUNTR/X? The Art of KPop Demon Hunters is silent on this point, but seems to imply there may well have been another girl band; it describes the Sunlight Sisters as “a band of Hunters/musicians prior to HUNTR/X,” not saying they came directly before them.

What Happened To Rumi’s Parents, & Is Celene The Last “Past” Hunter?

KPop Demon Hunters doesn’t really tell us what happened to Rumi’s mother, Mi-yeong Ru. We know she fell in love with a demon, but the precise circumstances are a mystery; Jinu’s example proves at least some demons were once human, so it’s possible she simply fell in love with someone who fell to his own dark impulses. Whatever the case may be, she was left pregnant with a child who was part demon, part Hunter. No doubt Rumi’s patterns were visible from birth.

Mi-yeong Ru died when Rumi was just an infant. The circumstances are a mystery, but it’s likely she died in battle, perhaps in a tragedy of some kind. Gwi-Ma would surely have been delighted at the prospect of causing chaos among the Hunters of that generation, and Mi-yeong’s personal relationship with a demon would have been the perfect way to pull it off.

Celene became Rumi’s adopted mother, and she raised the future HUNTR/X member to conceal her patterns; to hide them from the world, rejecting the demonic part of her own nature. It’s reasonable to assume Celene was the one who came up with the idea of creating the Golden Honmoon, strengthening the Honmoon so it could never be breached again by Gwi-Ma and his forces. This was likely motivated more by love of Rumi, and a desire for her to be freed from her patterns, than anything else.

By the time of KPop Demon Hunters, Celene is clearly retired. It’s possible (but doubtful) that she and her fellow remaining Sunlight Sister were still active until HUNTR/X stepped out into the spotlight. More likely, though, is that another generation of Hunters took up the challenge, fighting to keep the world safe from demons and the powers of darkness. If that’s the case, they don’t seem to have survived. Celene appears to be the only past Hunter active in KPop Demon Hunters, which tracks with the sad fates of Hunters past.
