Knicks Preview: 10 Games That Set The Tone For New York’s Season

· · 4 min read

The New York Knicks have another NBA Championship in their sights, and the road toward a second straight trip to the NBA Finals begins on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at Madison Square Garden. The defending champions open the 2026-27 season against the Philadelphia 76ers on Ring Night, with a full schedule of Eastern Conference tests waiting on the other side of the celebration. With the Knicks’ preseason behind them, this is when the games will count.

New York finished last season 53-29 and returns its starting five, including the “King of New York,” Jalen Brunson. That continuity gives the team a familiar foundation as they begin their title defense, but the first 10 games will offer an early look at how the group handles a demanding stretch of opponents.

There’s no easing into the season for the Knicks. Philadelphia comes to Madison Square Garden at 7 p.m. EDT for a nationally televised opener on NBC and Peacock, with the night also serving as the team’s ring and banner celebration. There’s no more time for the Knicks to work out the kinks.

The 76ers arrive with a remade roster featuring LeBron James, making this an especially intriguing first matchup. New York will have the home crowd behind it, but the attention won’t be limited to the championship ceremony. The Knicks will immediately have to turn the page from last season and show they’re ready to defend what they earned.

The celebration won’t last long. On Friday, Oct. 23, New York heads to the other garden to face the Boston Celtics in its first road game of the season. A trip to an arch-rival is a serious early test, especially with the Knicks still working to establish their regular-season rhythm. The Orlando Magic visit Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Oct. 25, bringing a physical, defensive-minded opponent into the mix. The Detroit Pistons follow on Oct. 27 in a divisional matchup against a young team on the rise.

Then are the Chicago Bulls. The Knicks travel to face the Bulls on Oct. 28, creating their first back-to-back situation of the season. With four games packed into a short stretch, managing energy and finding consistency will mean a lot as much as getting the results.

New York gets another look at Philadelphia on Oct. 30, this time on the road. The game also opens the Knicks’ NBA Cup group stage, adding another layer to a matchup that already carries lots of interest.

The schedule shifts back to Manhattan on Nov. 2, when the Brooklyn Nets visit for the Battle of New York. Two days later, Chicago returns to Madison Square Garden for the teams’ second meeting in a week. The Knicks will have a chance to respond to what they saw in the first matchup and make the most of their home-court advantage.

The Knicks face the Cleveland Cavaliers on Nov. 7 for a road matchup against one of the Eastern Conference’s top contenders. It’s another chance to measure themselves against a team that could matter when the playoff picture takes shape.

The Milwaukee Bucks close out the Knicks’ first 10 games with a visit to Madison Square Garden on Nov. 10. With the Miami Heat’s optimistic Giannis Antetokounmpo no longer leading the charge for Milwaukee, this encounter might look like an easy win for New York. But after what ought to be a hyper-competitive first nine games, the Knicks will be extremely vulnerable to taking their foot off the gas in this one. The Knicks won the title last season by taking care of business. They’ll need to show they still have that killer instinct against these new-look Bucks.

The opening stretch is packed with familiar Eastern Conference opponents, including two meetings with Philadelphia, a trip to Boston and games against Cleveland and Milwaukee. In fact, the Knicks won’t face their first Western Conference Opponent until their 15th game of the season. Since the Knicks’ ultimate priority is obviously the playoffs, it couldn’t be a better start for seeing how they stack up against potential pre-Finals opponents.

It all starts on Oct. 20. Ring Night brings the celebration, Philadelphia brings the first challenge, and New York begins the season with another championship run in mind.
